"Strongest" depends on a lot of things; but if you mean having had the lowest barometric pressure measured, (which would mean the "strongest ever in the Atlantic Basin, not just W, or October), it almost certainly is NOT the lowest "ever"... but "in the history record"... technicality, no doubt, but the superlatives expressed about any storm are more often than not, will vary from source to source. The NHC is saying that Wilma is 16.8 Billion, other sources say it's lower. Whatever, in its own way, a storm of any kind is potentially a harbinger of massive costs to those affected, in life, as well as property. JMHO.

Granted; but since the thread suggests it's strictly U.S. TC's.. I figured we were talking about Atlantic Hurricanes.....either way, point taken.

Are you hoping that you're on an island alone to receive such a storm because nobody on this board wants it? Have you seen the devastation from the last few years?

You might want to keep these kinds of comments to yourself or people will pounce on you like white on rice.

I was in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina hit. We had 2 feet of water in our house.

I was talking about just seeing a Hurricane as big as Typhoon Tip and as strong but just out in the water. Becoming a fish storm.

Sorry.

Ok, you probably should have said that in your post because that's not how it reads. We all like to see beautiful storms, just far away so they don't make landfall anywhere.

One name I didn't see on your list was Hurricane Marilyn from 1995....over $2,000,000 in damage, but, as usual, anything that happens down here in the Virgin Islands doesn't count, though we are a US territory....electricity took 3 months to get back, phones up to 8 months, and cable took over 2+ years....that storm devastated St. Thomas, not only in structural damage, but our tourism industry...I was here...25% of our homes were destroyed, 85% suffered damage, and then, what was taken in Marilyn was taken in Bertha in 1996....we've been lucky since, except for Georges, but I can tell you that people here are just a bit nervous this year....I'm hoping that everyone stays safe this year, and please, if they tell you to evacuate, DO IT!!!!!!...

Any particular reason that #103 and 104 on your list are the same storm?

I think the $10 billion for Rita is only an estimate of insured losses. There are lots people in this are with no insurance though, especially in Sabine Pass, which was completely devastated.

The numbers for Katrina are all over the place. For the time being, I think the most commonly used figure is $75 Billion; but I feel quite confident this will go up with further review. I know Andrew demolished quite a swath but it's not comparable to what Katrina did, and yet, when adjusted for inflation, it's 2/3 the figure for Katrina--and as I'd already stated in an aftermath thread--this just doesn't add up. IMO.

Even if Katrina's numbers are 75 Bill or 100 bill it still is the costliest hurricane ever and the worst natural disaster ever even though I consider the Tsunami of December 2004 the worst.

There were worse disasters than that tsunami... by a long shot. But this is focused on US TC disasters, and their cost.
