Max Mayfiled himself presented the 16.8 billion dollar figure for Wilma, that is the official damage figure (presented at 2006 AMS tropmet conference in Monterrey, CA)

Katrina's official death toll and damage are both under review

Just for another perspective, the III, (Insurance Information Institute) did this page on the 10 costliest "catastrophes" in the world, as well as in the U.S. (in terms of "Insurance" costs.)

do u find it odd that the Kobe earthquake does not even make the top 10 of costliest natural disasters globally

I was sure that quake had damages of around $120 Billion or so

The Kobe Earthquake of '95 I'm assuming, and yes, that was a really nasty quake. I have no clue how it didn't make that list; unless it just didn't have the insurance claims to make it--which is why I say that for all they're interest in looking at, these lists based on insurance claims (doubled or not), don't always portray the most accurate picture of just how much damage another catastrophe might have done when stacked up against it.

It is, however all we have to work with, at this time.
