Backing up the NHC

#1 Postby CrazyC83 » Thu Jun 01, 2006 11:58 pm

I read that the HPC is the first backup for the NHC. Are there any secondary backups if both are not operational? (This would be extremely rare)

Here is the backup order I would do:

1) Hydrometeorological Prediction Center

2) Ocean Prediction Center

3) Central Pacific Hurricane Center

4) Canadian Hurricane Centre

5) NWS/regional agency office closest to the hurricane that is operational

I think JTWC is next in line after the HPC.

CPHC, I believe

JTWC was never intended to be official information for public use, so I doubt that they would be the backup to HPC

Right JTWC will not back up the NHC. However, they can back up the satellite services that the TPC provides.

I was thinking the OPC since (I believe) they handle extratropical storms in the Atlantic.

From what I remember, it is HPC then CPHC. I don't believe there is a MOA between NHC and OPC for back-up.
