LOL, sounds like a truly fun bunch at the dingy dock! Maybe Island Woman could sell that song on a tea towel or placemat, with a beautiful, hazy-red-sky sunset in the background... :D :D

Update this morning: The sun rises and, again today, the island of St. Thomas is not visible, just a short 7 miles away. Looking at the nearby hill, the haze is evident.

2am advisory remarks:
A LOW LEVEL LINE OF CLOUDS EXTEND FROM THE ISLAND TOWARD THE NORTHWEST BUT THESE ARE BELIEVED TO BE WEATHER CLOUDS NOT ASH CLOUDS.

It looks like for the most part a much less plume of ash is comming out of the Soufriere today and that is good news for the Northern Leewards,Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as less ash is spreading.

bvigal, where and how do you sign up to get thsoe advisories mailed to you?

We haven't had any ash here, but we did have flights canceleld yesterday due to the ash.

from The Daily Herald, our local newspaper:

Ash causes cancellation of
American Airlines flights

AIRPORT--Aside from American Airlines, most carriers weren’t much affected by the ash from Montserrat’s Soufrière Hills volcano and operated normally in and out of St. Maarten on Monday.

American Airlines cancelled its Miami and New York flights on Monday. American Eagle didn’t execute one of its San Juan flights or the Santo Domingo flight, explained the airline’s Country Manager Michael Cleaver.

More or less 300 American Airlines/Eagle passengers were affected by the cancellations. Passengers were rebooked to Tuesday’s flights. Cleaver said the passengers understood the situation. There were no cancellations over the weekend, but the wind direction changed on Monday, which led to the decision by American Airlines/Eagle to cancel several flights.

The decision had everything to do with safety, said Cleaver. “We won’t jeopardise the passengers’ safety in any way and we feel very strongly about that,” he said, explaining that intake of volcanic ash has the potential to shut down aircraft engines.

American Airlines/Eagle operated a few flights on Monday, but only to and from San Juan. Cleaver said he expected normal operations on Tuesday.

US Airways executed its regular Charlotte, North Carolina, flight on Monday and so did BWIA West Indies Airways which operates out of Barbados three times per week, said an official at the airlines’ local handling agent Halley Aviation.

Arrindell Aviation Services reported no cancellations and Air France left for Paris as usual. LIAT too operated all its eight flights on Monday. Information could not be obtained from Caribbean Sun/Star and Winair. The latter airline executes daily flights to Montserrat from Antigua.

Dutch Antilles Express (DAE) executed its two daily Curaçao-St. Maarten flights. DAE’s aircraft merely flew at a lower than usual altitude, said Managing Director Floris van Pallandt. “Passengers didn’t notice anything,” he said. “Only I will notice that in a higher fuel bill,” he added jokingly. He said there had been continuous contact with the Meteorological Office.

Several airlines, including American, American Eagle, Air Jamaica, Aeropostal and Suriname Airways SLM, cancelled flights into and out of Curaçao over the weekend. Flights of US Airways, Royal Dutch Airlines KLM, Continental and American Airlines were affected in Aruba. The situation normalised on Monday.

The culprit in the mix-up in aviation was Montserrat, where the dome of the Soufrière Hills volcano collapsed on Saturday. Authorities on that island reported ash venting on the West side of the crater on Monday. Northeasterly winds carried the ash particles to the Leeward Islands over the weekend.

After that big eruption that caused the dome collapse on May 20th,still the volcano is emiting ash but not as pronnounced as in the days after the may 20th event. With the winds veering to the SouthEast Puerto Rico and the Virgin islands can expect ash to arrive.

You are right, Luis! Even though Soufriere has been emitting that ash almost daily since January, only lately have we had the more S/SE or SEerly prevailing winds to bring it our direction. Let's hope it either disperses before traveling too far, or else blows more to the south and misses PR/VI.

Aside from hurricanes, there is nothing else of such catastrophic nature that we have to worry about here in Florida. After all, we could say that we are fortunate. Well, that's until Cumbre Vieja decides to split the island of La Palma and send a mega tsunami our way.
