This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Possible Low forming? Don't get freaked out

#1 Postby tailgater » Sun May 28, 2006 7:46 am

Satellites loops show a low possibly trying to form off the East Coast and west of Bermuda.
My question would this system be considered a Sub Tropical or just a frontal low?

the TAFB is carrying an apparently extra tropical low in that vicinity on the 72 hour surface forecast....trof sw to central bahamas...deep layered trof still in place over the sw atlantic, pretty hostile aloft.....rich

It would be just a frontal low, unless it shows in the next few days or so to be a seperate entity from the front. Then it will probably take a few more days after that to even begin to aquire sub-tropical characteristics. And that all assumes it pretty much stays where it is (over the gulf-stream)

Water temperatures are still low for anything to develop.

You should have said that to Epsilon and Zeta.

As long as the core is warmer than the surrounding environment thats all that is needed for a warm core or tropical system. Late seasons typically have somewhat cool air moving over SST's in the mid 70's; that causes a lot of instability and if upper level winds are right you can end up with a tropical cyclone.

This thing looks pretty good though. Almost looks like it has banding features.

All im seeing now is a frontal low pressure system with some convection to the southeast of the low. Any tropical development is unlikely at this time.
