AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
1137 AM AST SAT MAY 20 2006

.UPDATE...THE MARCH OF THE LOW LEVEL DISTURBANCE ACROSS THE
WINDWARD ISLANDS AND INTO THE NORTHEAST CARIBBEAN AT ABOUT 14
KNOTS WAS PUNCTUATED BY A STRONG EMISSION FROM MOUNT MONTSERRAT.
PILOTS REPORTED AN ASH PLUME REACHING FLIGHT LEVEL 550. SATELLITE
PICTURES ALSO REVEALED A PLUME SPREADING OUTWARD IN ALL DIRECTIONS
FROM THE MOUNTAIN WITH CLOUD TOP TEMPERATURES NEAR -76 DEG
CELSIUS...AND ASH WAS BOTH STRONG ENOUGH AND HIGH ENOUGH TO BE
SEEN ON SAN JUANS DOPPLER RADAR IN CAYEY SOME 238 NM AWAY. VISIBLE
PICTURES CONTINUE TO INDICATE SOME EMISSIONS MOVING OFF TO THE
WEST...BUT THE LARGEST EMISSION HAS MOVED OFF THE ISLAND WITH THE
UPPER LEVEL FLOW AND IS MOVING WEST SOUTHWEST TO SOUTHWEST. VERY
LITTLE OF THIS ASH CLOUD WILL GRAZE THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF OUR
FORECAST AREA.

The above is an updated AFD from the NWS in San Juan about this eruption.

What in the world does bear watch have to do with a volcano erupting in the Caribbean?

I was just kidding since it looked like a flare-up of convection on some imagery. Sorry for sounding dumb...

It is a joke from last season, a play on the words bears watching, which was used quite a bit last year.

We were all speculating about an eruption yesterday morning because of the serious haze over us, eye irritations etc. And not enough wind to move it along. Now I know why! (I think my contacts are developing ash pitting).
