Soufriere at Monserrat - Dome Collapse 11z-May 20

#1 Postby bvigal » Sat May 20, 2006 8:11 am

I know this isn't a weather even (yet), but it is tropical. All having interest in Eastern Caribbean area should closely monitor this situation.

How bad is this eruption? Worse then the usual eruptions of Soufriere Hills?

I don't think this eruption was exactly unexpected. What was unknown was exactly when. Since the initial eruption years ago, this volcano has been closely monitored. Safety boundaries have been strictly enforced on Montserrat. This is mostly a concern for aviation. I just pray their were no planes in that immediate area when it blew.

Above is a link to all the past activity of eruptions by the Soufrierre. But no information about today's event. As you can see this volcano has been active since 1995 emiting ash that many times has reached the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico depending on how the wind direction is.

Yes, for the last 4 years I've been monitoring this volcano, receiving the updates automatically via email. During summer months, we are definitely downwind with prevailing SE trades. Usually what little ash it emits with the usual pyroclastic activity is dispersed before it reaches us. What a dramatic view on satellite today, though, huh Luis?!!

This is one of the largest events since 1995.Thankfully the winds are not bringing the ash towards the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Thanks, Luis! That's more accurate, for sure. I was typing pretty fast and doing 4 other things at once (saving loop snapshots) and making phone calls, etc., so didn't give much thought to title!! :D

Click Soufriere Hills at link above where you can find information about the history of this volcano.

Soufriere Graphic

Above is a general graphic of where the Soufriere is in the island of Monserrat just NW of Guadeloupe.

What a shame! The NexSat truecolor Caribbean view has not updated since 5/17 (other views of Atl,Pac are 5/20???) and of course it's a weekend, so OSEI won't get shots of this either. I'd love to see this in ultra-HIGH resolution color. Wow, would that be something!!

MODIS should catch this in another couple hours

There's a time lag involved here. As of 1340UTC (9:40AM EDT) the bird was over the east central Atlantic , so it should reach the Lesser Antilles soon - probably not the next orbit, but the second.

It won't show the immediate aftermath (1110UTC) but it should show the large ash cloud streaming downwind.

Above is a general reference of where the island of Montserrat is in the NE Caribbean for those who may not know.
