1987-Tropical Storm Knut

Anyone here at S2K know why the name 'KNUT' was retired from the 1987 Eastern Pacific hurricane season? I'd really like to know.

Knut appears to have been only a short-lived TS:

I think they retired it because it was decided that "Knut" was a stupid name for a hurricane. ;-) (sorry, couldn't resist)

They change the EPAC name lists every now and then so maybe Knut was taken out by a list change. Also, I don't think that Knut fits in with the other names in EPAC.

Knut is a Scandinavian name. I've heard it pronounced "noot" and also pronounced "kuh-noot".

It was probably retired because if you switch the U and N around it looks like-----

There was a football coach between 1918 to 1930 named Knute Rockne (sp?). From what I could tell, he was a great coach. I know that this piece of information is useless hurricane information, so back to our regularly schedule waiting for the 2006 season to begin.

Longwang was a Typhoon and the name is not pronounced as Americans pronounce it. It was also a prefectly legitimate name under the naming guidelines for WPAC storms.

In all seriousness, Knut is a variant spelling of Canute, who was the first king of a united England and therefore historically important.
