Had a chat with a Hurricane Hunter today.

#1 Postby MGC » Tue May 02, 2006 5:09 pm

I was over in Biloxi picking up some free trees today and I noticed a man wearing a Airforce uniform with the hurricane hunter patch on the shoulder. I went up to him and stuck up a conservation about last season's hurricanes. I asked him if he flew Katrina and he said he did. He said Katrina was a magnificant hurricane with a beautiful stadium-effect eye. Not very much turbulence and he didn't observe any lightning. I asked him if he also flew Wilma and again he replied that he had. He said he did a pentration when the eye was about 5NM wide and he said "we were in and out in a flash." Said that the crews that did the pentration when the eye was 2NM wide had a hard time getting a sonde dead center......MGC

He meant the interior of the eye. We obviously know what Wilma's eye looks like but it would be nice to know what the inside was like unless you can tell us CHRISTY.

If I'm not mistaken (it's been a while), but I thought the 2-5nm eye was during the nighttime. If that is the case, they probably couldn't see much. Even with some moonlight, eye passage would happen so quickly to really soak up the view.

What I don't like in advisories is the intermittent nature of the units used. All advisories, IMO, should always be in both imperial and metric units.

Those guys are very enlightening! I've actually met several in the past month (due to the fact that I'm in the process of cross-training as a DROP (dropsonde operator).

Did this person have brass on their cap (or shoulders)... if so, you probably ran into a ARWO (wx officer) or a Pilot/Navigator. If not... it was a DROP.
