New Idea! Let's pump cold water to stop hurricanes.

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Seems like a fun idea, right?

DO NOT START IT! :D

We had a huge discussion with some nut who claimed this was his idea last year.

So...let's let it rest people. :D

Do you realize how much water that would take? Heck....before we even began to notice a difference, we'd be adding so much water to the gulf, it would probably start flooding in low lying areas!

I don't think sacrificing a post to the underline gods will work, though.

That's not a new idea, it has been proposed for many years to try to bring icebergs into the path of hurricanes to cool the water and hurricanes in theory would disintegrate. As all we know, some things can only be accomplished in theory!

The mean flow of the Florida current is about 30 Sv. and by the time you get to the Gulf stream it's another couple of Sverdrups more and by the time the Gulf Stream gets to Hatteras it's between two and three times as much, IIRC.

It would take a heck of a lot of cold water to cool that significantly.

Just drop a glacier in the gulf. No problem. 8-)

And enjoy the tsunami that results

"Kithil estimated that 6000 of these units would be needed, deployed in a 100 km wide band stretching across the Gulf of Mexico, each pump spaced 50-100 meters apart."

If they are 100m apart and there is a 100km wide band from Houston to Tallahassee that is 1000km long. That is 100,000 km^2 if the pumps were spaced every 100m you would need 10,000,000 units (10,000 x 1,000 units) where is he getting 6000? The cost would then be scaled to 4 trillion dollars! Not to mention the catastrophic environmental costs. Wouldn't all that upwelling bring enough nutrients to the surface to cause a red tide (or some sort of algeal explostion) on a scale that has never been seen before?

If it works, wouldn't it potentially have a negative effect on those currents and energy transportation?

Why don't people leave nature alone? All this helps to balance the Eco-system cycles. Just be prepared for her fury.

We can't even protect our own nation from a invastion, how on earth can we pump tens of bllions if not more cold water into the Gulf stream? Which will cut off in send us into a ice age. These people are nuts.

Sounds really profound to me. I still think some miss the point that hurricanes occur for a reason. They are in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment. They are just part of the natural process in which the earth attempts to distribute the suns heat. Disrupting them in any way could have serious repercussions.

You mean to tell me they actually let someone present this idea?? Did they tear them apart?
