Financial crisis in Puerto Rico

Here in Puerto Rico, we will be fine. We are tough down here and everything will work out fine. This is just a case of spending more than we had in the coffers. We will be just fine.
We had trash pickup today. Our courthouse here in Dorado was open all day, people coming and going. Not all towns are broke. I think our town still has money to pay salaries. I called my husband and he said the university was going strong. I think people knew it was coming and they plan ahead just like a cane coming. It won't last long. My husband and all his students who work for him will be paid all summer, they are paid thru Federal grants and my husband has all that money in his account. This is all politics, no winners cause all sides want their way, just like in the US.
We cannot complain. We are still 100 per cent better off than those cities and states that got trashed by Katrina. We still have our homes and jobs. Some may just have to wait a bit to get that next paycheck.

Well Janice I dont want to talk about politics here as storm2k does not allow that.However that has to do in a good part with what is going on here.The best hope is that they talk and resolve this crisis as soon as possible because as more time goes by Puerto Rico sinks like the Titanic.Also Puerto Rico may suffer greatly if this crisis goes for many days because the tourism industry will go down.

Yes, I agree with you 100 percent. They have to get this settled fast. I am sure they know it, so I hope it happens soon.
I am trying to keep a positive attitude towards this. Hope they get it solved this week.
People have house payments, car payments, insurance payments and food.

Sadly the news has not been good today to resolve the crisis.There was a meeting between the Governor and the Speaker of the house to try to resolve the impasse but no progress was made and the shutdown continues.

SAN JUAN (EFE) – Gov. Aníbal Acevedo Vilá left the meeting with House Speaker José Aponte abruptly after the legislative leader allegedly offered the governor a handkerchief to dry his tears.
Following the brief meeting, Acevedo Vilá told reporters that Aponte had offered to hand him a handkerchief after seeing the somber look on his face.
The governor deemed Aponte’s comment an insult and a sign of disrespect towards the more than 95,000 Puerto Ricans who are out on the street as a result of the current fiscal crisis that led to the partial closing of local government agencies.
Acevedo Vilá said the failed conversation was another one of his attempts at finding a solution the crisis.
Aponte, on the other hand, accused the governor of lying.
According to Aponte, Acevedo Vilá asked him if he was happy about what had happened. “The governor deliberately misunderstood me in order to use it to his advantage,” he said.
In the meeting scheduled for 5 p.m., they were expected to discuss Bill 2577, which imposes an extraordinary tax on the corporations and societies that have generated a gross income of over $10 million.
The measure is in the Senate and will be returned to the Treasury Committee for amendments.

Third day of the Finnancial crisis at the goverment and no progress has been made.There is talk by the unions of a general strike in the next few days.Also Standard and Poors and Moodys haved said this morning that the credit for Puerto Rico will be downgraded to F if this continues.

Aponte Hernández, who said he believes in control, dialogue, and moderation, announced that he plans to appoint a task force Wednesday to study the measures that could help solve the government budget crisis.
"Fellow legislator (Héctor) Ferrer Ríos and I have continued our dialogue in order to keep communication on an even keel, regardless of what might have happened in previous days, including [last night],” Aponte Hernández said.
He noted that their legislative duty should be more important that any other incident that might take place along the way.
The House speaker asked Ferrer to tell the governor that the doors of parliament remain open for whenever he feels ready to sit down and talk.

The latest is that the Governor has gone to the Capitol for meetings with all the parties involved.I hope that this meeting resolve this.If not then we can expect a general strike in the comming days.But let's see first what will occur this evening and hopefully the crisis is resolved.
