Problems of living in a hurricane prone area.

Scheduling around hurricane months. An unwritten rule around here for us is that there will be no traveling more than a couple hours drive from mid Aug. to mid Sept. This came to being in the eighties when we had to cancel some trips due to hurricanes. Well after a few years we decided that we could relax that rule. I had a major requalification class scheduled for late Aug. in 99. Had to cancel because I had to serve in the Dare Co EOC because of Dennis. It was bad luck for this course because it was at the same time in 96 (Fran) and 98 (Bonnie) and I had to cancel those years too. I finally took the course and exam last year (they finally moved it to March). Well this year the GIA has their International Gemological Symposium (last one was in 98) and I would love to go (I'm a Graduate Gemologist) but I know I can't. Why, well it's in San Diego on Aug. 27 to 29, damn. Being a business and home owner on the Outer Banks I just can't take the chance.

How about instead of a holiday or vacation fund we have a hurricane fund for supplies and evacuation expenses: FUN!!

Get out, there arent any serious problems living in a hurricane prone area, well maybe losing your house every year but thats not a real problem

My parents just left to go out west today. They will be gone for 2 weeks. Driving up to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon. Going to Montana, Wyoming, etc... They were supposed to leave the day Katrina hit. I told them months in advance, I had a bad feeling a hurricane was going to hit here around the time they were going to leave. I was right. So now it is 8 months later and they finally got to leave.

I almost had my trip ruined by Hurricane Dennis. I went to Destin, Florida the week of August 4th-11. Dennis hit only a few weeks before. Only minor damage to the downtown Destin area where we were staying. Beach was still in great shape. However, a tropical low formed right off Destin the day we arrived. My first almost 3 days of vacation was almost a total washout. It was a good thing we had the condo rented for a whole week. Otherwise, vacation would of been ruined. If it would of not been so close to land, it would of became a depression. It rained so much that it flooded Destin while we were there. However, the weather was gorgeous the rest of the week. I am planning a trip to Galveston, Texas the last week of July. Just hope a hurricane does not follow me there as well.

I dont see it as anymore of a problem than for people in the midwest with Tornadoes. Never heard of them canceling plans in the spring in Tornado Alley. While there is a slight chance a hurricane can affect a given area during the peak of the season, the odds are really astronomical for any given residence. I'd Watch the 5 day forecast maps when a storm is present and if you are in the middle of the cone, keep an eye on it and return early from vacation if a watch or warning is issued. Only problem is if you were from say florida and travelled to a place like arizona... you wouldnt get watches/warnings from back home and might have to check with friends/family for updates as I dont think it would be on AZ radio/tv.

We definitely plan around the hurricane season here. Not only do we pay serious attention to when we will or will not leave, we also don't have people come down at what might be a really bad time (which of course is their vacation time AND the cheapest time to get here...not hard to figure that one out).
Some people leave for the major part of the season, especially those who live on their boats. One boat guy told me the other day he's sick of going to Venezula or T & T every summer but what else can he do? I didn't cry for him

To me, it looks like he has/had to cancel because he works for the Dare County EOC. And those dates don't look good to me, as I will be vacationing down on the Outer Banks with a group of friends the week before Labor Day weekend. We got lucky last year with Ophiella. The wife and I were down there while she was meandering off the Southeast coast. Hopefully, this year, we will be lucky again. We have the hurricane insurance on our rental, so if something happens, we will be able to get some of our money back.

We don't go anywhere far-flung in August, September or October. It would be terrible to be stuck somewhere else while a major hurricane bears down on your area. The risks are just too great. You can leave and not see anything on the horizon, while two days later, something has spun up and is taking aim at your home. Especially the past couple years. We've been "in the cone" seemingly every other week during hurricane season.

Well the best advise i have for everyone is that if u live in a hurricane prone area just make sure u and your family have a hurricane plan in place come june 1.good luck everyone....

Hurricane are a way of life in alot of places along the coast!and of course the carribean,the gulf of mexico we are all prone to hurricane in those areas.

I'd like to get out of town myself. I finally slept almost thru the whole night last night ... only woke up one time at 1 am ... quickly took 4 ibuprofen and zonked out again. After this past weekend of winds up to 40 mph and downpours of flooding rain ... I know I'm not ready for hurricane season yet. Oh how I dread June 1st.
