I was outside when we got a severe thunderstorm warning. Sometimes I like to stand out on the car port part that is covered by a portion of the apartment. When a couple of close lightening strikes were very nearby I reluctantly went inside as I didn't want to get struck. I always have visions of being struck by lightening during a storm and I don't want to take a chance either.

What a tragic story. I also will sometimes watch storms from the garage but all it takes is a real close bolt and my butt is inside. If only all lightning stayed in the sky...

My father had told me when he was a young soldier at Ft Eustis VA..probably in the early 50's, that he saw lightning pop out of CLEAR SKY and strike and kill another young soldier training on a boat on the James River. Also several years ago a man in New Jersey was killed by lighting on a beach from a storm several miles offshore. The period immediately after a thunderstorm is especially dangerous because people tend to let the guard down as the rumbles of thunder fade away and erroneously think its safe to venture out. I have seen some wicked cloud to ground strikes here on the backside of a storm long after the winds die down and the rain fades to a drizzle.

WHEN YOU BEGIN TO HEAR THUNDER IT IS NO LONGER SAFE TO BE OUTSIDE!!! WAIT AT LEAST 30 MINUTES AFTER THE STORM HAS PASSED AND YOU CAN NO LONGER HEAR THUNDER BEFORE YOU VENTURE OUTSIDE. DO NOT BECOME ANOTHER STATISTIC!!

I like to do the same thing...and usually before/after a storm I tend to walk all the way outside and watch the lightning. I guess after that story though...I may have to think twice.

My cousin doesn't follow that saying. He thinks that since he has never been hit by lightning before means he won't get hit at all. Ignorance like that is what gets you killed.

thats so sad ya i remember i almost got struck i was in a car though when a big flash of light blinded me literally for 5 secs and at the same time a deafening roar which made my ears ring forever i must have been a couple hundred feet from where the bolt struck all i know is that was to close for me i went bcak home and stayed inside

My sister actually got hit while in the second story of her house...It never rained that day and the storm was over 10 miles away...They revived her on the way to the hospital..Its been over 10 years and I don't know how many operations she has had but she still has problems because of it...
