#1 Postby Jam151 » Tue Apr 25, 2006 5:32 pm

Who are some of the better camera meteorologists in the Mobile area? I would like to know as I will be spending half the hurricane season here.

David Glenn on NBC 15 is the best meterologist in the Mobile area. Alan Seals on WKRG News 5 isn't bad. Both stations have good coverage when hurricanes are headed this way.

WKRG is the best IMO.

If you live in Pensacola WEAR isn't bad at all, I don't know what ivanhater is talking about.

IMO strum is horrible. It would be nice if he would think for himself once in a while, instead of using accuweather products all the time..a few times during hurricane season he only showed the accuweather track instead of the official NHC track, but that is just my opinion

I absolutely love WPMI NBC 15 for their hurricane coverage. They have a live stream at http://www.wpmi.com during severe weather. I would stay away from anyone using Accuweather forecasts. I've never sean WPMI use anything but NHC forecasts.

Hope this helps!

If they are using Accuweather forecasts it shows they do not consider accuracy more important than ratings. The thing about Accuweather forecasts is they love to get the attention and hype of wacky and far-out forecasts, but such forecasts are not accurate. The NHC does a fantastic job and has a team of experts that is second to none.

The best way to get track information is http://www.nhc.noaa.gov. That way, you get the updates faster than the TV stations do. Then watch WPMI for the local impact and evacuation/shelter/closings information.

It's not Strum's fault for the Accuweather track maps. The station is owned by one of those mega corporations, and the corporate mothership dictates that they use Accuweather.

It seems like there is a point when a northern Gulf storm is getting close to landfall when the WEAR forecasters are allowed to say what they actually think and not just the party line, and they're much better when that happens.

Exactly what yzerfan said. Though, I would like to add that in an email reply on such a subject from Strum himself, he noted that the forecasts (daily, etc.) are actually made by WEAR, they just use AccuWeather graphics.

I agree WKRG is the best.

Alan Sealls is da man!

Seriously, I prefer him. Alan teaches meteorology at U of South AL. Next would be David Glenn. I'm just not a huge John Edd fan.

Now, my all time favorite is hearing Dr. Bill Williams' analysis on the radio. When a storm is threatening I sure wish I had his direct line!

Many times I have seen Allen Strumm give the NHC track AND the Accu Weather track...Especially when there is a hurricane in the GOM.
Sometimes the tracks differ but usually not by much.
So you see folks, when it comes to a hurricane tracks, he shows us BOTH.

That's a dumb thing to say...you know he is just kidding around!

BTW. there have been times that we have been put under a thunderstorm warning by the National Weather Service and we never got hardly any rain (if any at all) Sometimes they will be right on the money though!!!
So you see, NO ones perfect...not even the national weather service.

Allen on WKRG and David Glenn on NBC would be my first two picks.

IMO, Alan is too uptight or something. He needs to be more smooth or something. He jsut doesn't seem natural on-camera.

Not in the Mobile / Pensacola area but here in Panama City we have Jason Kelly on Channel 7 and he is very much into tropical weather...he is friends with Stacy Stewart at the NHC and he gets alot of his info directly from Stewart...he usually gives very indepth, detailed explanations in his tropical wx forecasts...

Well he has to....if it was his choice he probably wouldn't. But, since the station owner contracts the graphics to AccuWeather, in exchange for that, they have to show the AccuWeather track. Strum does place more emphasis on the NHC tracks and usually quickly blows by the AW track.
