CloudSat Launch "Revealing the inner secrets of clouds&

#1 Postby CentralFlGal » Fri Apr 21, 2006 9:39 am

Launch scrubbed for today; scheduled for 6:02am (Eastern) tomorrow, April 22, 2006 - Earth Day.

NASA will launch the CloudSat and the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) spacecraft to study the role that clouds and aerosols play in regulating Earth's weather, climate and air quality. Launch is planned for no earlier than September 29, 2005 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., aboard a Boeing Delta II launch vehicle. The satellites will be launched into a 705-kilometer (438-mile) circular sun-synchronous polar orbit, and will fly in orbital formation as part of the "A-Train" constellation of three other Earth Observing satellites including Aqua, Aura and Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales' (CNES) PARASOL. Together, the A-Train satellites will substantially increase our understanding of the climate system and the potential for climate change. The CloudSat mission funded lifetime is 22 months to enable more than one seasonal cycle to be observed, although the radar lifetime is expected to approach three years. CALIPSO is planned for three years of on-orbit operation.

Hope it goes tomeorrow. These missions will add substantially to our understanding of the role of clouds in climate change.

I agree. That is great news. Can't wait until it is up, and can start transmitting data back to Earth. It should be interesting (to say the least) to see what it discovers.

Scheduled launch time is now 6:02am EDT Sunday.

Friday's launch was scrubbed due to communication problems. It was initially rescheduled for this morning, but pushed to Sunday morning because they didn't have some support for the chase plane ready.

If they did launch it today they would have some problems with the clouds and rain.

The launch is from Vandenburg, so that's not an issue.

New Launch Date - Tueday, April 25

The launch of NASA's CloudSat and CALIPSO mission has been rescheduled until Tuesday morning after a refueling aircraft for the radar tracking plane was unavailable Sunday morning. Liftoff is scheduled for 6:02 a.m. EDT from Space Launch Complex 2.

---

I could say why the refueling planes have been unavailable for two day, thus causing this delay, but chances are any discussion of that would wind up being political.
