About the same as a supernova occurring on one side of the universe, and another one occurring on the other side of the universe a million years later.

"at most" makes it sound like that's not much. 150mph is horrific, but I thought it made landfall at 180mph anyway.

Where can one find recon with those winds in the report? Any land based stations record anything near 180 mph? How about pressures lower than 900 mb? Do let us know if anyone sees any obs that come close to the reported 180 mph landfall.

Australia does not do reconnaissance, and furthermore all land based stations in the path of the system have pretty much been put out of business.

if they do not have reconnaissance and there are no land reports...how do they know this has winds of 180mph for sure?

There is satellite evidence that Monica weakened some before landfall. My guess based upon what I saw on satellite was a landfalling intensity of about 130kt. There was a station nearby but it was outside the eyewall and only got strong TS force winds. The area where Monica hit is extremely sparsely populated so there may not have been anyone living near the landfall location. There were some rather bodacious claims as to intensity based upon satellite analysis but the point to remember is that if there are no in situ measurements then those estimates remain just that-estimates and not official.
