Dry May This Year?

#1 Postby Scorpion » Sat Apr 22, 2006 11:14 pm

I know this topic has beaten to death the past few months, however I just wanted to point out that the pattern is very different than last year. The past month or so has been dominated by summer-like conditions. Last year there were many stalled troughs and lots of rain. It got down into the 50's even into May. Is it too early to tell if next month will yield below average rainfall?

If this pattern persists, it certainly looks like a dry May down here... of course I'm sure this will be offset by higher than normal somewhere else.

It is so dry down here in South Alabama that I am beginning to see dust on everything. We did have a little rain on Friday night but not enough to help. We need a major rain event to help with the drought here. The drought is bad enough that they are talking about putting restrictions on water usage here.

Scorpion - good observation. The Spring pattern is much different than last year. It is too early to say what will happen.

It has been very dry in my own area most of the Winter, and all Spring thus far. I also know that areas to the SE, like Boston, are also in bad need of rain.

Here in Maine Our fire danger is very high. They aren't giving out burn permits or anything so no controled burning of branches or anything is allowed right now. This past week theres been huge wild fires around the state and it wasn't helped any by the strong winds we had most of the week from that stalled low sitting just south of nova scotia all week. However hopefully this rain we are getting tonight and tomorrow will help some! we are like 2 inches below normal for this month at this point! and last month we were like 2 or 3 inches below the normal for march! for march the average is 4.14 inches we ended up with 0.96 inches in the whole month! lol

I think everyone knows that the pattern is simular to 04 that follows weather. The million dollar question is how long can this pattern last its getting old. I want a week of steady stratiform rain like they get in Seattle all year long. Just venting.

Yes the pattern looks similar to 2004, except the potential La Nina that looks like it wants to form, but will have to wait and see until it becomes more established.
