Guess what we can see weather wise is going to be controlled now. I fear this is just the beginning. :( :( :( :( If this has been posted already I apologize.

From what I'm reading about this, I don't think this is going to limit access for the general public. Sounds like it's more of a security thing to identify (via keys/certs, etc) the users that are accessing the site . I'm not an IT person, so maybe some more learned folks can chime in.

From what I understand, the public access with not change. People without a PKI / CAC will still be able to access the public side. However, if you want the level I access, you will need the PKI.

Unfortunately, Rainband, e-mailing them will do hardly any good. Adding security to this page outweighs giving public access since this page is designed for DoD and DoC interests.

That's interesting that they are announcing it anyway...I've always been of the opinion that they were tracking my usage of the site anyway. At any rate as long as the service doesn't disappear and can still be used I don't mind it at all.

Like I said, from what I understand (as a DoD meteorologist), the public access with not change. People without a PKI / CAC will still be able to access the public side. However, if you want the level I access, you will need the PKI.

Then again... I could be wrong...

FWIW... remember the the JTWC did the same thing (require
MANDATORY PKI certificate authentication) a year or two ago...

...and the public still has access to it...
