Brent...I never thought that. Since Bush is tough on terrorism, I always thought it could be a reference to what could have been because he's President Wimpy. When a terrorist called and asked to speak to the President (to give an ultimatum), he got all jumpy and told his Chief of Staff, "I can't talk to a terrorist. You talk to him. See what he wants." and he was shaking scared. You had to see it...it was pathetic. Grab a spine, will ya! President Palmer would have never acted like this!

Oh my...wow...hanging off the edge of your seat excitement. Tonight's show was great! I was about to have a heart attack when Aaron Pierce was shot though. Noooo....not him. He is DA MAN. I was more worried about him than the First Lady and the Russian president and his wife. heh

And I can't believe Jack...Mr. Insight...went into that bunker thing with Henderson and believed him. I felt so bad for him when he realized how he was duped. But he's still smart as a whip and found a way to save himself, and rather quickly!

I thought you fellow 24 fans would enjoy this article.

Itzin Is '24's' Petrified POTUS

There seems to be a critical mass of fictional presidents in primetime at the moment, from Jed Bartlet on "The West Wing" to Mackenzie Allen on "Commander In Chief" to the boss of Vice President Caroline Reynolds on "Prison Break."

And then there's "24," airing Monday on FOX. The breathless thriller gave America its first black fictional president, the beloved David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), then nearly killed him a few times, before actually killing him as an ex-president in a surprise assassination that kicked off this season's 24 hours of terror.

Last season, Palmer's unfortunate successor, Keeler (Geoff Pierson), had his Air Force One shot down (he survived, but is unable to take office again), which made way for the emergency installation of his vacillating vice president, Logan (Gregory Itzin), who's still in office this year.
Logan has waffled his way along, ducking the hard decisions, leaning on his advisors and not always standing behind CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) Agent Jack Bauer (Keifer Sutherland), which, in the "24" universe, is akin to high treason.

"It's hard not to take these slams personally," Itzin says. "The first public comment I got was when we were eating at an Italian restaurant in Glendale. This family walked up and said, 'We have two words for you ... Habib Marwan'." -- referring to last season's chief terrorist -- "Then they said, 'We just hate you. We want to reach into the TV and strangle you. You're doing a fantastic job.'"

It gets worse when Itzin is out golfing with buddy Haysbert. "People are constantly coming up to Dennis and saying, 'I love you on that show. Are you coming back?' And they look over at me. They do a double take and say, 'It's him,' like I can't hear them. 'That's the bad president.' Dennis smiles, and we have to deal with this. Dennis has to say, 'You don't understand, he's a very nice man, actually.'

"Palmer said 'yes' whenever Jack Bauer needed to do something, and he's America's avenging angel."

So, we've gone from the strong fist of Palmer to the strong fist of Keeler to ... "The weak, limp wrist of Logan," Itzin says. "Why did I supply you with that?"

Now "24" fans know what happens when Bauer doesn't have the Chief Executive in his corner.

"Drama is about conflict," Itzin says. "I just walk into a room, and there's conflict. Also, they turned the whole concept on its head. Until episode 18 of last year, you essentially had people in the office of president that you assumed you could trust, count on, and they would always back Jack Bauer.

"Well, things have changed."

Itzin knew early on that he wasn't going to get to be a noble character.

"I came in, and I gave them choices," he says. "As I did different takes, it was between semi-staunch leader of men and abject coward. And they inevitably picked the abject-coward takes, so I knew where we were going."

This season's non-stop plot has a group of Russian separatists hijacking a shipment of nerve-gas canisters. In the Monday, Feb. 13, episode, the terrorists -- along with an undercover Bauer -- headed to a shopping mall to test the triggering mechanism on one of the canisters.

The question became, should Bauer and his team thwart the attack, thereby tipping their hand, or let it happen in hopes the terrorists would lead them to the remaining canisters?

Pressured by advisors both in his own circle and at CTU, Logan opted to release the gas. But Bauer rejected the order and found another way out.

"And how do you feel about that?" Itzin says of Logan's decision. "But do you understand it? I did my best to play, first of all, the fact that I didn't want it to go down this way, and the fact that, do I have to make this freaking decision? And OK, this is what my advisors, every stinking one of them, told me to do. OK.

"Is he happy about this? I think, wonderfully, the toll from this day is going to eat a big acid hole in this man's soul."

Almost without fail, real presidents exit the Oval Office a lot grayer than when they came in.

"That's correct," Itzin says. "I understand why people get the way they are. Even the small amount of time I've been doing this, I'm being told to be honest with the American people, and I can see how, why, these people are never honest with the American people. If you told the American people, really, what the world was like, there would be a collective nervous breakdown.

"So I understand why they become paranoid and secretive and private and closed-mouthed and shifty-eyed and all those things."

Off-camera, Haysbert often expressed the wish that Palmer could grab a gun and join Bauer in the field. Turns out Itzin harbors a similar -- and likely equally unrequited -- fantasy.

"We have these great skylights," he says, "in the Western White House or Logan's retreat or whatever we're calling it, and I had visions of terrorists coming down through there, and me grabbing a nine-iron and putting a hole in somebody's head. Really, I did.

"I'd love to be a hero. I'd love to pull out a Glock and blow away ... I don't know. Let me think about who I'd like to blow away."

Not if his wife tears away whatever he has left first!!

If she was pissed at him for trying to send her away, I CAN'T WAIT to see her reaction when she realizes that CTU was the one that stopped the motorcade and not him!

Ponyboy was on tonight's 2-hour treat! C Thomas Howell as Kim's beau (a very creepy one at that). And you just knew things were going to get sticky once she showed up at CTU...

I hope Tony beats the crumbs out of Henderson (what's it with guys in this episode allowing their wives to be in harm's way, i.e. attack on the motorcade and a bullet in the leg?).

And I'm so mad at Samwise Gamgee. How dare that little hobbit turn into an illogical tyrant whose actions put 40 CTU personnel out of work.

I wish "24 - The Game" wasn't just on the Playstation platform. ::sigh:: I'll just have to wait until the Xbox or PC versions come out.

Not Edgar. Nooooooooooooooooooooooo...

I couldn't watch it earlier and just watched it on my DVR. I am so upset about Edgar and like CentralFlGal, furious with Samwise Gamgee. I can't believe he wouldn't report his PRECIOUS keycard stolen in the middle of this crisis. I realize he thinks that it was his druggie sister and her boyfriend trying to get cash, but he's also high up in CTU. Don't ya think it might occur to him that the terrorists were somehow involved? Possibly? It did me. I kept waiting for him to tell someone! And now all those CTU people are gone, including Edgar.

If you didn't watch the previews for next week, don't read the next paragraph.

Now, not only did all those people in CTU die, according to the previews, someone will have to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the others. I can't take this anymore! I don't wanna watch!! (but I have to)

I don't understand a few things though. When they first realized that CTU had been compromised with the stolen keycard, why on earth didn't they evacuate or at least put on masks? I mean...they know the terrorists have the cansisters. Hello???
Instead of a lockdown, most everyone should have had time to get out, and those who were looking for the terrorist should have put on masks. I know they didn't want the terrorist to get out though, so put on masks! Surely a place like CTU has them.

This episode nearly gave me a heart attack...and I'm too young for that.

My take on last night's episode (*don't read the paragraph on Barry the therapist if you don't suspect anything and want to stay that way).

SG, my sentiments exactly on Edgar. Poor guy just broke down the emotional wall of Chloe's too.

Lynn (Sean Astin's character) really p'd me off. It made no sense that he went into CTU with all guns blazing. The only redeeming point to this character is that he was the only one who recognized the old code Bauer used during the airport hostage situation. Other than that, I wanted to set Sauron loose on that little hobbit. And why didn't he develop bruises/welts/or at least red marks from getting his tuckus knocked around by his sister's bf? Also, I missed how he got back into CTU without his keycard somehow. Once they placed him in holding, why didn't they flag his keycard access? It seems like the logical thing to do as security is concerned; but, alas, we wouldn't be left with this current week's cliffhanger I suppose.

Was the hobbit's holding room one of the ones sealed off from the gas?

(*my Barry the therapist paragraph)
What's your take on Kim's new beau, Ponyboy? Henderson told Bauer that he "looked after" Kim... and now she's involved with her therapist? Things that make you go "hmmmm". This would make sense as to why the therapist demanded to be present at the reunion of father and daughter (finally wanted information first-hand instead of plucking it from Kim's head). I commented to my husband as we were watching that that was too strange for a new character to suddenly poof onto the scene and take a stance against Jack right at the get-go. Kim might be mad now, but the idea of Jack hiding the fact that he wasn't dead may come to light very for her very soon. Henderson's wife suddenly learned that her dh wasn't very forthcoming with information concerning his "work" (and almost ended up in a wheelchair because of his "work"), so this Henderson/Barry scenario kinda fits. All the key players are now in lock-down together at CTU 8-)

Is it Monday yet?

I like the references to "the hobbit".

Actually, I think that Sean Astin is doing an excellent job in this role.

CentralFl has a great point about the key card - how the heck did he get back in without it?

I also want to know how his sister's boyfriend just happened to get in touch with one of those terrorists to sell him the key-card. I still think that SOMEHOW Lynn is involved in this.

Kim's psychologist/bf was alittle pushy to me as well.

The rate that this season is going, ANYTHING is possible.

As for Edgar, I just can't believe that he is gone. Him and Chloe were good friends in a brother/sister kind of way and definately cared about one another. I'm really going to miss him.

Are we SURE all those people are really gone? How many have come back this year already?

Lynn is DEFINITELY involved with the terrorists in some way!! You heard it here.

As to so many loose ends with things we would logically think should have/would have happened--I hate to say this, but "it is a TV show". Liberties will be taken to make the show work even if some people will go "hmmm, how did that happen?"

He eats breakfast??? WHEN???

At least not during the 24 hours that are being aired.

This season, I must say, has really kept me on my toes. I didn't see that one coming at all!

OK... so I recorded the show Monday Night since The Apprentice wasn't on and got around to watching it late last night before I went to sleep.

WOW is all I can say. I'm going to have to record the episodes for the rest of the season...

There was an interview earlier this year where the Surnow, one of the producers, said that the movie will probably come out in 2008. He said they want to start shooting during the hiatus between Season 6 and 7. The movie would be released after Season 7. Fox has renewed 24 through 2007-2008.

As for "24" time concept, an excerpt from the interview:
Question: How you going to do a movie of 90 minutes or two hours -- how you going to do the concept of 24 hours?

SURNOW: Well, the thought for the movie is the whole movie would take place in a 24-hour period. It wouldn't be a two-hour real time period. It would be three segments of real time in the course of one day, and this way it allows us to travel more and not be grounded in Los Angeles. We want to do a much more international story for the movie.
