New Record: 18 names retired in 6 years & decade record

#1 Postby HURAKAN » Thu Apr 06, 2006 8:45 pm

Since names began to be retired in 1954, there has never been a 6 year period with 18 names retired, neither a decade with 18 names retired. The old decade record was for the '90 - '99 decade with 15 names retired.

2000: Keith (4)

2001: Allison (ts), Iris (4), Michelle (4)

2002: Isidore (3), Lili (4)

2003: Fabian (4), Isabel (5), Juan (2)

2004: Charley (4), Frances (4), Ivan (5), Jeanne (3)

2005: Dennis (4), Katrina (5), Rita (5), Stan (1), Wilma (5)

() = highest category reached.

In average, like in 2001 & 2003, three names were retired in a season.

This link contains the retired names by decade:

This is the first year since 2000 that an 'I' name hasn't been retired.

I don't see how 2004 and 2005 break all of our records and suddenly 2006 is mild year. It makes me wonder if we are in a pattern that has not been experienced in all of our years of record keeping=....

Just keep in mind what someone (forgot whom - sorry) mentioned in another thread...the exceptionally warm SST's last year contributed to a lot of waves developing that probably wouldn't have under normal circumstances. 2006 will probably be close to 2004 in activity, which in turn will be probably close to the norm for a few years (just my observation, not based on anything really - lol).

Mild "perhaps" in relation to '04 & '05, but certainly not in relation to recent history. Everything I've seen/heard still says '06 is a season that's expected to produce tropical systems well above the "average".

And I agree, this pattern may be exactly as you say. History has to start somewhere, right!!

I expect that we will add 3-5 more names to the retirement home from the 2006 season...
