Last Season's July Hurricane

#1 Postby Janice » Thu Mar 23, 2006 7:48 pm

Last year we had a cane in July. Was that the first system in the waters? When can we expect to start seeing systems off Africa this season. Do you think we could possibly have a cane in May or June?

The storm you're probably thinking of is Dennis, which came skirted south of Puerto Rico but hit Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba hard. Last July, 5 storms formed, which is a new record. Cindy, Emily, Franklin, and Gert also formed in July. (Arlene and Bret formed in June)

In a normal season, there's roughly a 50% chance of a storm forming in June or July...On average you'd see 1-3 storms form before August 1st, which is when things really pick up.

Spoiled homes. Spoiled schools. Spoiled neighboorhoods. Spoiled businesses. Spoiled lives. Spoiled coastlines.

I dunno, I guess in one context, people are pretty spoiled down here.

Dennis. That was the one the Governor of Alabama started calling each house, business, etc trying to get people to leave. This was when they thought it was headed straight for Mobile Bay. We were in Daphne at city hall and they even called there to warn us. After seeing Katrina's damage I think I will be leaving this time.
