I've asked this before but I want to know what you all think going into hurricane season 2006 and the fact that there is the possibility we will be hit alot like we were in the 1930s and 1940s. Consider a hurricane like Andrew into Miami (instead of Homestead) or a Katrina into Palm Beach (instead of New Orleans)

If there is total devastation down here...I may really consider it

or just consider Katrina having 24 more hours over the Atlantic, no need to translate the MS landfall to PB, just give the cane that made landfall in Miami an extra 24

If a major hits MIA, I will carefully review my options, and the decision would be based in part on MIA adpoting the Cayman building code for the future

I wouldn't intend to leave, but if I had no home or job after the storm it might not be my choice. Think of all the dislocated people from the Gulf Coast these days; I'm sure they all didn't want to leave their towns but no longer had lives that were viable there. The job is key; if I lose mine and can't get another one in the area because of widespread devastration and social disruption, well I'm not going to stay here and starve.

I'll never leave because of a hurricane ---- 50% ---- [ 3 ]

:uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow: ----- That's what I USED to say ----- :uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow:

That was pre-Katrina. Now, I'm leaving my life-long hometown of Biloxi because of that "major hit". Before 8/29/05, I would never have imagined in a million years I'd be moving because of a hurricane... Hopefully we're not going from the frying pan into the fire with our move to St. Pete.

Of course the poll could say "If a major hits <anywhere> would you move?" since this board DOES consist of more than just S. FL folks...

That is true, but considering that South Florida would get hit more frequently than say, Houston Texas, I would think the chances are higher that people would move from here knowing what could be ahead.

We've been planning on moving since the 2004 season, most likely that will happen within 18 months. I know Delray Beach was extremely lucky and we didn't get much damage here but I feel it's just a matter of time. Riding out Fran, Jeanne, and Wilma in a late 70's wood frame home was not fun but the ol' gal held up very well, only a few shingles lost from Wilma. Now if a 4 or 5 hits, I don't think we'll be as lucky. If it weren't for the hurricanes, I would stay here for several more years.

Well, it's entirely possible that "what could be ahead" is a trend where Houston ends up getting more hits than S. Florida. The truth of the matter is that every coastal community - especially those on the mid to lower east coast and the entire GOM - is equally at risk of a hit in any given season or with any given storm. But, historically speaking, your point is a valid one.

Anyway, not trying to make an issue, just felt the need to put the topic on the table... 8-)

We have nine years til retirement. IF our house was destroyed and/or DH lost his job, then a hurricane would drive us away. Other than that, we're here til retirement then Im OUTTA HERE.

I know quite a few people who said "never"..... before Katrina.

As of this date, they are scattered all over the state--some the country--with no intentions of returning.

Never say never!

If you lose your house in a hurricane your probably be moving or relocating to where your other relatives live because they'll take you in.

Maybe I'm crazy, and maybe this isn't realistic, but I'll never leave New Orleans... and you know how well our geography deals with hurricanes. :( I just feel that New Orleans has a chance to be saved, and I'm gonna give it my best shot.

Yall in Florida, I can't really speculate. I guess it comes down to a personal decision with everyone... and I can't second guess any decision that anyone makes for themselves or their family.

I voted and I am not from Florida. Sorry. I misread the poll question. Living along the Gulf Coast i will say a hurricane is not going to make me leave this area. The way I see it no matter where you live there is some form of mother nature. Some areas have earthquakes while others have fires. Then there is the north easters and snow storms. And you can't forget the tornadoes. Yes we do have some tornadoes in our area but nothing like north of us. I can deal with a hurricane. I can leave to get out of the way but I would never move. I grew up down here in South Alabama and moved away. Look where I came back to...The coast.

4th generation Jacksonville native. Just getting tired of the current trend. Especially with family now.
