wow. that's really scary.......4 category 5 hurricanes, holy crap, that's how much, on average, that you gwt 3 category 5's every century.....wtff....we got MORE than that...in ONE YEAR...

3 Cat 5s landfalls in the US in one century, not 3 total. Over the past hundred years there have been about 30 Cat 5s.

What are they saying? 13 hurricanes have made landfall in the U.S. since 2002?

They must mean 13 direct landfalls, not including such systems as Alex or Ophelia (hurricane strikes I think is the best term)

Since 2002, I can identify the following direct landfalls:

2002: Lili
2003: Claudette, Isabel
2004: Charley, Frances, Gaston, Ivan, Jeanne
2005: Cindy, Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Wilma

Tropical storm landfalls:

2002: Cristobal, Edouard, Fay, Hanna, Isidore, Kyle
2003: Bill, Grace, Henri
2004: Bonnie, Hermine, Matthew
2005: Arlene, Tammy

Near-misses (either stayed offshore or made landfall elsewhere while impacting the US with at least TS-force winds):

2002: Arthur, Gustav
2003: Erika
2004: Alex
2005: Emily, Ophelia

It counts as a storm for the area if it produced at least tropical storm force winds or heavy rain on land, even if it did not make landfall.

Total East Coast (Key West to Cape Race) storms since 2002:
2002: Arthur, Edouard, Gustav, Kyle
2003: Isabel, Juan, Kate
2004: Alex, Charley, Frances, Gaston, Hermine, Jeanne
2005: Katrina, Ophelia, Rita, Tammy

Total Gulf Coast (tip of Yucatan to S Everglades) storms since 2002:
2002: Bertha, Fay, Hanna, Isidore, Lili
2003: Bill, Claudette, Erika, Grace, Henri, Larry
2004: Bonnie, Charley, Frances, Ivan, Matthew
2005: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Dennis, Emily, Gert, Jose, Katrina, Rita, Stan, Wilma

Total Caribbean Sea (Cancun to Venezuela) storms since 2002:
2002: Isidore
2003: Claudette, Larry
2004: (none)
2005: Emily, Stan, Wilma, Beta, Gamma

Total Caribbean Islands storms since 2002:
2002: Isidore, Lili
2003: Mindy, Odette
2004: Charley, Earl, Frances, Ivan, Jeanne
2005: Dennis, Wilma, Alpha

Total other storms with land impacts since 2002:
2002: (none)
2003: Fabian
2004: Karl

Of course this could have happened other years prior to the 1950s and aircraft flights. It is hard to say with any great certainty just how strong a storm's peak strength was in the middle of a wide Ocean.

Yup, Cindy was upgraded to "Hurricane Cindy" in the report issued a few weeks back.
