Most memorable TWC hurricane moments

#1 Postby Jim Cantore » Tue Mar 07, 2006 10:06 pm

I thought this would be fun for people to list their most memorable TWC hurricane moments

here are some of mine

Hurricane Fran: Watching Jim Cantore getting drilled by 100mph winds in Wilimington, and losing contact with Jeff Morrow in Myrtle Beach, I remember being sick with a stomach virus that night.

Hurricane Floyd: John Hope spending sleepless nights on the air, keeping his calm while millions were panicing, one of the most professional acting folks out there.

Hurricane Debby: I was sitting with a 103 fever watching TWC talk about a huge disaster for south Florida, and just as fast as that started it ended.

Hurricane Isabel: How much fun I had here, Mike Seidel getting blown away, Jim Cantore being chased by surge.

Hurricane Charley: Who can forget Jim Cantore standing in an alley while winds roared by at over 100mph.

Hurricane Katrina, Oh the memories here, Jim Cantore stranded in Biloxi, Mike Seidel in a flooded Mobile.

Hurricane Wilma: Two words, Tar Paper.

And also a must mention to me was hearing about the passing of John Hope, a desvestating day/

I truly used to like watching and listening to John Hope... a great guy with a lot of savvy on these storms... they lost a LOT when they lost him for their "Tropical Update".. I agree!

I won't forget John Hope telling Jim Cantore during the eye of a storm in the Carolinas (can't remember which one); to listen for the birds.

Jim says, "The Birds???"

John says something to affect of that the birds follow the eye and you can hear them to just listen.

To which Jim pauses quietly and then tells him that he hears them!!!

Kind of a corny story but it was fun.

At TWC they all treated him with the reverence that he deserved.
He is sorely missed......

I was a junior in college(Auburn University) when Hugo hit. I remember staying up all night watching TWX being mesmerized.

Yes John Hope was the "DUKE" of the TWC.

Memorable was last year when a lighting bolt hit near Mike Sidell (?) and he had the look of a very scared puppy

I took John Hopes words like Gods, always so professional in any situation, even in the mass panic of Hurricane Floyd, one of the most wonderful displays of professonalisim I've ever seen?

I'll never forget the look on Jim Cantore's face the day Andrew bombed.

John Hope passed away before Hurricanes became commonplace starting in 2004.I wish he was there to see Katrina beat his daughter's (His daughter name is Camille) storm surge record

"I dont think we're gonna make it folks" Jim Cantore during Katrina. We all thought he was a goner.

The fear in Cantore's eyes when it appeared as if he was going to have to withstand Charley's full force on a causeway as he was trapped due to the change in track and intensity. That last minute north wobble may have saved his life there

Does anyone have video of Cantore's moments with Katrina?

That I'd like to see

I also remember Jim Cantore in the snorkel truck during Hurricane Frances, not to mention Mike Seidels encounter with Al Roker.

I'll never forget the irony of my being awake at 12:30 or so to monitor the progress of category 1 Wilma. I don't know the name of the meteorologist that was on camera, but he went in front of the screen with Wilma in the background, and with a piece of paper in his hand.

He was quiet - and he looked at the paper - and said, "Wow." Then he looked back at the paper, looked at the camera, sighed, and said, "Wow. I've never seen anything like this... But according to the hurricane hunters, this information is accurate. The most recent update puts hurricane Wilma at 900 mb..." Whew. That was a moment. :(

I remember what Derrick mentioned about Cantore. He also was begging and pleading on air with people to get out of harms way after it became apparent that Charley was rapidly strengthening.

I'll never forget on August the 28th the fear in the eyes of everyone at TWC

also I remember Stephanie Abrams standing on the beach in Gulf Shores with absolutely gigantic waves behind her and the police running back and forth throwing people out

and I'll never forget how exausted all the reporters were on Hurricane Frances second day on September 5th

or during Hurricane Bonnie watching as Mike Seidel got blasted with 90mph winds for hours on end in Wrightsville beach.

And not to mention Jim Cantore flipping out when Opal jumped to 150mph His exact words "We're looking at an Andrew type storm, possibly even stronger if you could imagine that"

Mike Seidel during Hurricane Frances stating "Obviously the light are on and no one is home" while a watching a stupid surfer jump off a pier into the surf. It was classic!
