Blue Tarps Still Scatter the S. Florida Landscape
I was in a plane into Ft. Lauderdale International and I could not believe how many blue tarps I saw dotting the S. Florida landscape. I sure hope we avoid any tropical activity this year.
Even a strong T.S. or minimal hurricane would wreak havok with the damage done from last year that still remains and I feel the chance of tropical activity (even if not a major hurricane) is high this year.

Blue tarps are everywhere here in the New Orleans area, as well. I am one of those lucky few who had no flooding or roof damage from Katrina (just some wind damage for me and no water in the house), yet there are still many blue tarps in my neighborhood. Most are shredded and useless by now due to inferior materials used in Louisiana (according to FEMA). Roofers are working very hard and long hours but it is exhausting work and takes time.
Blue tarps are the least of our problems, I suppose. Much of the city is just ghostly ruins at this point, with rebuilding efforts mired in complications related to red tape, insurance problems, FEMA/SBA problems, the new elevation maps which are not out yet, and other problems. Perhaps the worst is lack of basic utilities (such as electricity throughout much of New Orleans) and infrastructure, and nebulous indications of when or if these may be repaired in most parts of New Orleans. If nobody is coming back in a given neighborhood, there is no motivation to restore infrastructure or utilities there. If there is no infrastructure or utilities, people are hesitant to return. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
Sometimes we have assurances that levees will be restored to their former strength by June 1st. Other times, the key word is "maybe".
I, too, hope we avoid any tropical activity this year. I plan to retire elsewhere as soon as I am eligible (4 years from now), and just got back from spending my vacation in checking out a good location in Missouri - - selected because it is a pleasant, small town, far from hurricanes. As tough and exhausting as the Katrina aftermath has been, it has been even worse for the elderly.

3. The company that makes the blue tarps for FEMA!!!!!!!!!!!!
And of course, but a little OT, the companies that make all the FEMA trailers...
BTW... My blue roof, thankfully, now exists only in my memory and a few pics. I will finally finish my roof tomorrow when I nail on the last four runs of the hip and ridge cap!! YEE HAA!!!

The little ceramic looking things (I can't remember exactly what they are called) that can be used on a roof instead of shingles, are hard to come by since the hurricanes of '04, or so I hear. That would be at least part of the reason for the delay some have in fixing their roof. I'm glad Orlando didn't take a hit in '05 after taking 4 in '04.
