Hmmm. As long as we keep the party going with unabated runaway development on the coastlines and in high risk areas, while ignoring or delaying coastal restoration, "doomsdays" may quite likely become a frequent occurence in the U.S....whether on the massive scale of Katrina or relatively smaller scale of Charley.

I'm gonna go with a nay on this one... there'll be land hits, but hopefully no doomsday storms...

Wasn't Katrina doomsday enough? Over 1000 dead. The offical death toll may never be known. And New Orleans and the MS Gulf Coast still looks like a warzone. I was in New Orleans last Saturday and cars and even boats still lined the streets. Flooded out and abandoned. It is no where close to getting back to normal in many areas. Lets just think positive that we won't see any more life altering storms for many years to come. And yes, I realize it could of been worse. It could of been a full 5 when it hit. But, the storm surge is what kills not so much the wind. And Katrina may have not had the winds of a 5, but the surge was.

Well, with Charley and Ivan in 2004 and of course Katrina, I think we have pretty much seen doomsday storms depending on whether or not you are in Punta Gorda, Pensacola, or New Orleans. Other areas may get their doomsday storm this year as unfortunately, the trend year to year seems to be getting more and more destructive. So I think yes, the "doomsday" storm will happen again this year (for somebody).

I think to be considered "doomsday" for a particular area, a storm must meet AT LEAST TWO of the the following criteria:
-Kill 500+
-Make landfall at 145mph+ (In a populated area)
-Have hurricane force winds over 100 miles inland
-Create storm surges over 18 feet.
-Drop over 18" of rain on a single area.
-Cause 25 billion+ in damages
-Damage or destroy over 50% of structures in the area

Point VERY well taken! Agree with the post about Katrina being enough for quite a while.... sticking with my original nay for this year.
