For sale: Dallas tree with Virgin Mary image

Crowds have become burden for family seeking return to 'normal life'

By ALAN MELSON / The Dallas Morning News

DALLAS, Texas - After providing shade for decades, a tree in the front yard of an Oak Cliff home began attracting people last fall for an entirely different reason.

The majestic 50-foot tree in the 2900 block of South Edgefield Avenue boasts what many say is a likeness of the Virgin Mary, a 4-foot-tall image that has drawn thousands of people from around the world seeking spiritual enrichment and healing.

Now, homeowner Gilbert Peña hopes his tree can continue to help others – but at a new location. This week, Mr. Peña elected to list the tree on online auction site eBay because the crowds have become a burden. He said the decision was tough, but in the best interests of his family and neighborhood.

“We had offers before, but turned them away,” Mr. Peña said. “Now we feel like we're always under a spotlight. We want to go back to our normal life.”

The Peñas enlisted the help of iSold It, a local franchise of a chain that helps people sell items online. Store owner David Goldstein said the Peñas didn’t know what type of tree they have and he was challenged in figuring out how to market it, but he was happy to help them.

“They feel like something special has happened to them, but at the same time they are trying to reclaim their privacy,” Mr. Goldstein said. “Their front yard has had so many visitors that it's literally been worn away and is just mud.”

In early November, Mr. Peña said, his young daughters began telling tales of the tree “crying.” Two weeks later, his brother-in-law noticed the image in the tree’s bark while sitting in the front yard – and Mr. Peña’s wife summoned the neighbors.

"Once they saw it, they began crying and worshiping, and said it was the Virgin Mary,” Mr. Peña said.

Calling it a “miracle,” he began to tell family and friends, and media accounts led to streams of visitors. Mr. Peña said people told him they journeyed from all over the United States and parts of Canada and Mexico, and from as far away as Korea and Vietnam.

“Since the first appearance to now (we’ve had) about 4,000 people,” he said. “People have been calling me saying it showed up on TV in Spain."

Mr. Peña said initially the attention was a blessing, but then the crowds grew, arriving at all hours and taking “souvenirs” of limbs and bark, while leaving a mounting shrine of candles, flowers and other religious mementos.

“We were doing something for the community – for people to look at something that hadn't been heard of here in Oak Cliff,” he said. “But it put us in a dark place. We couldn’t go outside like we used to. People were always here, wanting to take pictures of us.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, no one had put down the requested initial bid of $5,000. Mr. Peña said he will use the proceeds to repair the yard and to donate to the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and their church.

Mr. Goldstein said the winning bidder must pay for all removal costs, including the stump. A local tree-moving company told him the tree still could be relocated despite its size.

“It's not cheap, but it can be done,” he said.

Mr. Peña said he has a smaller tree in his yard that bears a similar likeness, which he plans to keep “for the community.” But he hopes the main tree’s removal will help restore his yard and his life.

“I'm just going to bring it back to the way it was before,” he said. “I will probably plant another tree there.”

2-Year-Old Horse Sold for Record $16M

MIAMI, Fla. (AP) - A 2-year-old colt who has yet to run a race drew a world record sale price of $16 million at auction.

Demi O'Byrne, an agent, was the bidder and purchased the colt for a team headed by John Magnier and Michael Tabor of the Ireland-based Coolmore Stud at the Fasig-Tipton sale at Calder Race Course.

Tuesday's sale broke the record of $13.1 million paid in the mid-1980s for Seattle Dancer, a half-brother to Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. The previous record for a 2-year-old was $5.2 million for a son of Tale of the Cat, who was sold at this sale last year.

"You don't expect to sell a $16 million horse," said Boyd Browning, chief operating officer for Fasig-Tipton of Lexington, Kentucky. "I don't know if it will happen again in my lifetime."

O'Byrne and John Ferguson, who represents Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum of Dubai, pushed the bidding into record territory.

"The two major buyers in the world got hooked up in an emotional bidding situation, and sometimes logic doesn't prevail," Browning said. "An auction bid is not always a rational decision, but sometimes an emotional decision. Both people involved in the auction want to own the best horses in the world."

The colt's sale price last year at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July select auction now looks like the bargain of a lifetime. Randy Hartley and Dean De Renzo of Florida bought the yearling for $425,000 for the purpose of reselling him, a practice known as pinhooking.

The colt, the second foal out of Magical Masquerade by Forestry, was bred in Florida by Satish Sanan's Padua Stables. An impressive workout on Feb. 19 left potential buyers excited, prompting speculation that the colt might set a sale record. The colt ran an eighth of a mile in under 10 seconds — 12 seconds is considered average.

"There were very high expectations," Browning said. "He's a beautiful horse, and he withstood the scrutiny of all the major buyers all week long."

And a little-bitty thimble of popcorn, please

OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) - Budding Canadian film makers looking for a big break may want to think small -- about 2 inches by 2 inches to be exact -- organizers of Canada's first mobile film festival said Wednesday.

Mobifest producers are looking for bite-sized films that are up to 60 seconds long and produced for viewing on cellphones and other handheld devices.

"The big picture is that there's a billion (mobile) phones worldwide and an increasing percentage of them are playing back video," said Duncan Kennedy, president of Nownow Corp., which is producing the contest. "It's a new distribution channel for independent film making."

Similar festivals, for what is dubbed "short attention span theater," have been launched in Portugal and Asia. Industry executives recently gathered at the Sundance Film Festival to predict the future of the small screen.

Mobifest already has a few entries, including one from U.S. animator Mike Browne, whose "Brokeback Chicken" spoofs Ang Lee's Oscar favorite "Brokeback Mountain."

"We see a lot of these submissions being funny," said Kennedy. "We hope people are going to share these laughs together, and why wouldn't you want to have a joke in your pocket?"

So-called "pocket films" ideally have limited dialogue, because they are played on phones and often compete with background noise, and have lots of close shots and large text and titles, added Kennedy. His year-old, Toronto-based company produces and distributes made-for-mobile movies under sponsorship and carrier deals.

Sponsored by Palm Canada, Mobifest will accept international submissions through April 30, with winners announced May 17.

Finalists will be picked by online voters, who can view films at http://www.mobifest.ca. Judges will then determine winners for best Canadian mobile film, best of festival, and best film shot and edited exclusively on a Palm Treo smartphone.

Award-winning films will premiere on Movieola, The Short Film Channel, and screen on Air Canada flights this summer. The festival winner also gets a mobile movie production package worth about C$1,500 ($1,327).

Bike Band Sticker Causes Bomb Scare

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) - A sticker on a bicycle that said "this bike is a pipe bomb" caused a scare Thursday at Ohio University that shut down four buildings before authorities learned the message was the name of a punk rock band, a university spokesman said.

The sticker on the bike chained outside the university-owned Oasis restaurant near the center of campus attracted the attention of a police officer about 5:30 a.m., spokesman Jack Jeffery said.

Police blocked streets around the restaurant and the Columbus police bomb squad came from about 65 miles away.

The bomb experts hit the bike with a high-pressure spray of water, then pried it apart with a hydraulic device normally used to rescue accident victims trapped in cars, acting Athens Fire Chief Ken Gilbraith said. Once they had it open, they saw there was no bomb.

The buildings, including some classroom facilities, were reopened after a couple hours.

Dean of Students Terry Hogan urged students to be more careful when showing support for the band from Pensacola, Fla.

University police interviewed the bike's owner then released him, Jeffery said. Police are still investigating.

An e-mail seeking comment was sent to Plan-It-X Records, listed on a Web site for the band as its record label. The label does not have a published phone number.

Fla. Legislator Throws in Towel Over Pie

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A Suwanee county legislator who was locked in fierce battle this week has thrown in his kitchen towel.

Rep. Dwight Stansel, a pecan farmer, waged a war of sorts earlier this week when he challenged a fellow legislator's plan to make key lime pie Florida's official pie, The Miami Herald reported in Thursday's editions.

But Stansel, D-Live Oak, met his match Wednesday when 30 people in Broward County signed a petition to defend the dessert. People railed against pecan pie on two morning shows, and bloggers logged in to join the key-lime ranks.

"Make it chicken pot pie," Stansel. "We got too many damn things to worry about besides pie."

20-Foot 'Super Colon' Visits Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Could you call it the colon that ate Columbus? A giant organ that is a natural target for wisecracks is making a stop downtown as part of its four-city tour.

A 20-foot long "Super Colon," on display to promote National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, is big enough to let visitors walk through and look at the inside.

The giant inflated tube, brought by The Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation, is meant to remind visitors of the dangers of colorectal cancer and other ailments that strike the lower digestive tract.

One tourist from Michigan wondered if you'd move through it faster if you ate chocolate.

Lawyer to Sue Over 'Heavy Hitter' Name

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - A Nevada lawyer who calls himself "The Heavy Hitter" in television ads is going to bat — for himself. Personal injury lawyer Glen Lerner said he will sue in federal court to protect his right to free speech after he ran afoul of the State Bar of Nevada.

"The bar told me by calling myself 'The Heavy Hitter,' it was false and misleading because it was stating I'm the only heavy hitter," Lerner said. "It's beyond ridiculous."

Lerner, who advertises heavily on television in the Las Vegas area, said he has butted heads with the bar over several commercials, including one in which a giant phone falls on an unsuspecting litigant.

"They said it created anxiety," Lerner said. "Does the average person really believe a giant phone is going to land on them?"

Other Lerner ads show him spinning like a human tornado, generating cash for his clients, and cutting checks for his clients as an announcer screams, "Goal!"

State Bar attorney Rob Bare said about two-thirds of the 1,200 complaints the bar gets about lawyer ads per year come from other lawyers.

Bill Turner, chairman of a committee formed by the Nevada Supreme Court to examine lawyer advertising, called it difficult to weigh protecting the public with the right to free speech.

"It's a balance," Turner said. "There are the rights of a business person, and there are the rights of the public."

S.C. Mayor Gets $375 Ticket for Speeding

COTTAGEVILLE, S.C. (AP) - The mayor of this rural town was candid after being ticketed for driving 103 mph in a 55 mph zone: "Thank goodness I'm not trying to get re-elected," said Mayor Bert Reeves.

The mayor, who has worked to erase the towns' reputation as a speed trap, was given a $375 ticket Wednesday after a Colleton County sheriff's deputy stopped his 2005 Ford F-250 on state Highway 303.

Reeves told the deputy he thought he was driving about 80 mph, according to an incident report. Deputy Robert Cook wrote that Reeves has had numerous traffic violations and requested the ticket not be reduced.

AAA Carolinas recognized Cottageville in December as one of the state's top five communities with populations of less than 10,000 dedicated to traffic safety. The town is about 45 miles northwest of Charleston.

Since Reeves has been in office, Cottageville has reduced its reliance on revenue from speeding tickets.

The mayor declined to discuss the ticket, but said he is not seeking another term.

"I will have done my public service," he said.

McDonald's changes sign to woo kosher diners

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Under pressure from the city's chief rabbi, two Tel Aviv branches of the fast food firm McDonald's have changed the color of their trademark signs to assure diners that their burgers and fries are kosher.

In a first for McDonald's Corp., the golden arches at the two branches have new blue backgrounds, replacing the trademark red ones. The new signs also display the word "kosher," both in Hebrew and English.

The changes were made after Tel Aviv's chief Rabbi, Israel Meir Lau, demanded that a distinction be made.

"I was worried people would be confused, especially tourists who do not know Hebrew," Lau said.

"Blue is the sky, blue is the flag of Israel and blue is not red," Lau said. "There must be a clear and sharp difference."

All meat served at McDonald's branches in Israel is already kosher. But most of the more than 111 outlets serve dairy and meat items together and are open on the Jewish Sabbath and religious holidays, which is forbidden under Jewish law.

Only 12 branches are considered strictly kosher, where the menu does not include dairy products and the food is prepared to meet religious standards. Those 12 outlets are closed on the Jewish Sabbath and holidays.

Lau said he believed McDonald's would adopt the new style in other strictly kosher branches over time.

McDonald's said it hoped the change in Tel Aviv would be adopted in other areas of Israel and clear the way for new kosher restaurants to open.

Michael Kramer, a religious diner relishing a burger at one of the two Tel Aviv branches, welcomed the changes. "I can see from far away whether it is a kosher one," he said.

Roi Gerstein was unmoved. "I do not like this change because I am used to the red sign," he said, adding that kosher burgers without cheese were "just not tasty."

Star demands Playboy pull issue with her on cover

By Dan Whitcomb

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Reuters) - Film star Jessica Alba demanded that Playboy magazine pull its March issue, saying on Thursday that its editors made her an unwitting cover girl and misled readers into thinking they could see her nude inside.

Lawyers for Alba sent Playboy a letter threatening to sue if it did not remove the issue -- which features a publicity photo of the bikini-clad actress on the front -- from the stands and pay for damages to her reputation and career.

"Playboy has violated my personal rights and blatantly misled the public, who might think I had given them permission to put me on their cover when I didn't," Alba, 24, said in a statement.

Alba's lawyers say that after the "Fantastic Four" star refused to pose for Playboy, the magazine tricked Sony Pictures into giving them a publicity photo from her 2005 film "Into the Blue," for the cover.

In the February 23 letter, which was made public on the Smoking Gun Web site, attorney Brian Wolf says Playboy sought to create the false impression that Alba would appear in revealing pictures inside the magazine.

A Playboy spokeswoman said Alba was placed on the cover after being chosen "sexiest star of the year" by its readers. She was included inside the magazine in an article on the top 25 sexiest celebrities as chosen in an online poll

"Many celebrities have appeared on the cover of Playboy, but not nude, including Claudia Schiffer, Paris Hilton, Goldie Hawn, Raquel Welch, Barbra Streisand, Brooke Shields and Donald Trump," Playboy spokeswoman Lauren Malone said.

"Little Slum Inn" offers priceless views

By Terry Wade

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Breathtaking views high above Rio de Janeiro's beaches and mountains can be yours for just a few dollars a day -- if you skip pricey hotels and sleep in a slum.

Rio's slums, or favelas, are infamous for drug and gang violence. But a new hostel called "The Little Slum Inn" is attracting adventurous tourists, mainly from Germany, France and the United States, who dare to live amid the grit and poverty.

"This place isn't for wimps. If you are uptight, you can go stay at the Copacabana Palace," said co-owner and shantytown dweller Andreia Martins, 31, referring to the luxury beachfront hotel where the Rolling Stones stayed last month when they played a free concert for more than 1 million people.

You can only get to the jungle-covered hillside slum of Pereira da Silva on foot. Most of its 1,900 residents live in unpainted brick hovels they built themselves on irregular lots.

But the hostel owners say staying in the slum is safe. It has buried its violent past and gained a reputation as one of Rio's calmest favelas since police killed a neighborhood drug lord in a shootout seven years ago. A police squad also trains there, so gangs avoid the slum.

Residents of most of Rio's 600 shantytowns are not so lucky. Thugs employed by drug traffickers walk narrow streets with AK-47 assault rifles on their shoulders. Bloody clashes with police and rival gangs are common. Slum dwellers who work long hours for low pay as maids or gas station attendants then have to come home to a slum where they risk getting caught in gunfights.

Martins' clients at the Pousada Favelinha, as it is called in Portuguese, are tourists who pride themselves on avoiding glitzy tourist haunts and traveling off the beaten path to remote places like Laos and Cambodia.

Each room in the white, three-story inn has expansive terraces overlooking Rio's bay and cozy furnishings.

The tiny hostel's five rooms were booked solid during Rio's famous Carnival this week, even though the inn has no telephone and only accepts reservation requests by e-mail.

"I've had to turn people away," she said.

A room with a double bed costs about $35 a night. It costs $15 a head to sleep in a large room for single backpackers.

Her neighbors like the inn because it brings money into the community. Martins is working with the community association to set up a free health clinic staffed by visiting foreign doctors.

She employs two residents from the slum to run errands and clean and refers guests who like lots of beer to bars at the base of the hillside community. Martins says she is making decent money but complains of long hours.

"I still have to cook, clean and wash clothes. I'm not living the life of a rich lady yet."

Bolton's punctuality drive comes to early

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - An unpopular punctuality drive launched in the U.N. Security Council last month by U.S. Ambassador John Bolton came to an abrupt end on Thursday when Argentina took over the council's rotating presidency.

Bolton had cracked the whip while presiding over the 15-nation U.N. body in February, starting meetings precisely on time, even with empty chairs in the room, as part of a plan to modernize council operations.

He had also called in ambassadors almost every morning of the month for closed-door briefings by U.N. staff on overnight global political and peacekeeping developments.

But Argentine Ambassador Cesar Mayoral made clear it would be a different story in March.

If ambassadors wanted to come on time, it would be up to them, he told reporters.

As for the morning briefings, "this is impossible," he said. "We aren't having a daily briefing each day."

If an ambassador asked for a briefing on a particular matter, he would try to accommodate the request. But absent that, the council work program was simply too heavy, he said.

Some ambassadors had grumbled in February that they already had too many commitments to attend the daily sessions.

Bolton has described the U.S. campaign to reform the United Nations as an "irresistible force" pitted against an "immovable object."

Bypassing the U.S. Senate, President George W. Bush sent Bolton to the United Nations last August with instructions to shake up the world body after findings of mismanagement and corruption in the $64 billion oil-for-food program for Iraq.

Dog Is Included in Sale of House

SCOTT CITY, Mo. (AP) - Perhaps Rocky has a nose for real estate. The dog is credited with sealing a home sale in Missouri.

Jared and Whittnie Essner met Rocky while house-hunting in Scott City, Mo., and knew they'd found their home — and their new dog.

It turns out the seller couldn't keep Rocky, so as part of the deal, the little fella went with the house.

The realtor says she's never seen a contract like it: "Rocky was in black and white under personal property to stay."

The former owner has visitation rights whenever he wants to see the pooch.

And Jared Essner says he thinks the seller "had a better feeling" about the transaction after seeing the couple with the dog.

Peanut butter kiss 'did not kill teen'

SAGUENAY, Quebec (AP) - A 15-year-old girl with a peanut allergy did not die from kissing her boyfriend following his snack of peanut butter but from another cause, a Quebec coroner said Friday, countering a report that drew international attention late last year.

But Saguenay coroner Michel Miron would not reveal the cause of death because he has not yet submitted his final report to the provincial coroner's office and he is also waiting on some final test results.

The official said he wanted to speak out before the case was cited by the Canadian Association of Food Allergies.

"The Canadian Association of Food Allergies intended to use the Desforges case to launch an education campaign," he said. "I had to tell them the cause of death was different than first believed."

Christina Desforges died in a Quebec hospital in November. At the time officials said doctors were unable to treat her allergic reaction to the kiss the previous weekend.

Miron also said the teen did not receive a shot of Adrenalin immediately after being kissed. It was reported the shot had not penetrated her skin.

He said scientific journals had contacted him questioning the use of an Adrenalin shot and how it is injected.

But he said the teen did not use her syringe to give herself a shot of Adrenalin because she did not have an allergic reaction to peanut butter.

Ohio Man to Social Security: I'm Not Dead

CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) - Eighty-one-year-old Myron Manders wants the Social Security Administration to know that he still is alive. The problem is, it doesn't seem to be listening.

Last November, Manders was preparing to leave a hospital where he was treated for pneumonia when a social worker said his insurance company would not pay the bill because it believed Manders died on Sept. 1.

William Jarrett, a Social Security spokesman in Cleveland, said Friday the mistake was due to an erroneous document. He could not disclose the error's source.

"It was a mistake on our part and we are apologetic," he said.

Manders' wife, Eunice, remembered that she first reacted to the news of her husband's alleged demise with anger.

"I never laughed about it," Myron Manders said.

Jarrett said Eunice Manders has been paid a survivor's benefit, which he said is now considered an overpayment she will be responsible for paying back, although she will have a right to appeal.

Manders, who describes himself as an almost-retired architect, sought to clear up the problem by showing up at a Social Security office. The in-person appearance did not help.

The Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing that Manders served in the Army during World War II, notified Eunice that she is a beneficiary on his Veterans Affairs life insurance policy and that Social Security had notified the VA of Myron's death.

The latest correspondence from Social Security came Monday addressed to Eunice, advising she is entitled to monthly widow's benefits. Myron Manders would not say exactly what was going through his mind. "Curse words," he hinted.

Lost Ring Found in Fla. Home 23 Yrs. Later

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Marlene Kiraly asked her husband to hide the 3 1/2 karat, uninsured diamond ring her mother had given her just before she died 23 years ago. Problem was, he did such a good job no one could remember where it was.

That was until John Kilcooley was renovating a bathroom in his home last month. Tucked away in a bag, behind a light fixture, Kilcooley found a 3 1/2 karat diamond ring.

Instead of keeping it, he tracked down the home's previous owner who sold the house in 2004. His wife called Kiraly and asked if she lost something during the move.

"She started crying and said her mother's ring," John Kilcooley said. "We could have sold the ring, but if I would have lost something or she would have lost something, we'd want somebody to track us down."

The Kiralys unsuccessfully searched the house before they moved and had tried numerous ways to jog their memory.

"I went to a psychic a month ago to find out where the ring is, and she said my husband hid it really well and I would find it," Kiraly, 48, of Lake Worth said.

As a reward, the Kiralys said they would fix the Kilcooleys' hurricane-damaged outdoor screens.

Conn. Lawmaker Hooked on Bathroom Proposal

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Restaurants, gas stations, stores and other businesses in one Connecticut city may soon face another regulation — coat hooks in all public bathrooms.

The City Council Ordinance Committee has endorsed a proposal from City Councilman Keith Rodgerson to create a local law requiring coat hooks. Rodgerson has said no one should have to leave belongings on a public bathroom floor because there is no coat hook.

The City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the proposal Monday before deciding on whether to amend the city's health code to include the proposal.

Playboy says won't pull Jessica Alba issue

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Reuters) - Playboy won't pull its March issue over actress Jessica Alba's claim that she was made an unwitting cover girl to fool readers into thinking she is nude inside, the magazine said on Friday.

"Playboy has done nothing wrong, so there is no reason to pull our issue off of newsstands," spokeswoman Lauren Melone said.

Alba accuses Playboy of violating her rights and misleading the public by getting a publicity photo from her 2005 movie "Into the Blue" from Sony Pictures and running it on the cover -- complete with a bunny logo superimposed on her bikini top.

Lawyers for Alba, 24, have threatened to sue Playboy unless the issue was pulled off the stands and demanded that the "Fantastic Four" star be compensated for damage to her image.

They also accuse Playboy of duping Sony Pictures into supplying a photo of the Golden Globe-nominated actress, wearing a multicolored bikini and sporting a belly ring, for the cover.

Playboy said Alba was placed on the cover after being chosen "sexiest star of the year" by its readers. She was included inside the magazine in an article on the top 25 sexiest celebrities as chosen in an online poll.

The magazine added that celebrities routinely grace its cover without appearing naked inside.

Revealed - the German spy Britain couldn't catch

By Andrew Gray

LONDON, England (Reuters) - Policemen spent months hanging around London nightclubs and Britain's spies checked sightings from northern Scotland to southern England -- but they never found the most elusive German agent in the country.

Newly released secret files show a Gestapo spy with a taste for the high life who used the name Wilhelm Moerz, among many others, was the subject of a frantic search during World War Two after he was reportedly spotted in central London.

Moerz is believed to be the only German agent in Britain to have escaped capture during the war, according to experts at the National Archives in London which published the documents as part of a programme to release once-secret information.

"He is undoubtedly one of the cleverest secret agents the Germans have at the present time," reads a note, stamped "secret", for London's police chief in 1940.

Variously described in the files as a "thorough scoundrel", an "affected and somewhat overdressed individual" and a "very dangerous double-crosser", Moerz first came to the attention of British agents in Prague in the late 1930s.

He was believed to have denounced opponents of Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime, leading to their arrest or death.

Moerz was suspected of involvement in the capture of two British spies in the Dutch town of Venlo in 1939. He was also reported to have spent time in Britain in 1939 before the war.

But it was a report that Moerz had been sighted getting into a taxi in London's Regent Street on May 25, 1940, that set alarm bells ringing. Britain's Security Service, better known as MI5, launched a manhunt and ordered police to check hotels.

Moerz is described as well-dressed, aged about 35, "but looks younger ... slim, even on the thin side" with "very prominent, projecting upper teeth". A photograph in the files shows him sporting a dark tie with light stripes.

SNUFFBOX ON THE CASE

Alerts were sent to ports, airports and police forces, including one message signed by an intelligence official with the unlikely name of Adam Snuffbox.

The letter to London's police chief said Moerz's arrest would be "a matter of the greatest significance" as he had likely come to lead German espionage efforts in Britain.

Two hotel receptionists and a nightclub hostess recalled encounters with Moerz. He was suspected of being in Edinburgh, Newcastle and Leeds and even on a ship from the Orkney Islands off northern Scotland in the following weeks.

Two policemen scoured London for more than two months.

"In the course of their duties, they have had to visit many restaurants, cafes and night-clubs, with the result that we are now faced with a rather formidable bill of costs and, I am afraid, still without any Wilhelm Moerz!" says a note from intelligence officer Dick White, who later became MI5 chief.

Some officials came to believe the Regent Street sighting had been false, although a hotel register and witness statements suggested Moerz had been in Britain earlier in the year. By 1941, MI5 had officially given up looking for him.

The files offer an intriguing post-script -- a letter in a German newspaper in 1955 suggested Werner Mikkelsen, believed to be Moerz's real name, was living in Frankfurt.

The file does not record if British agents tried once again to track down the man who had eluded them 15 years before.
