This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Do you favor or not naming sub-tropical systems?

#1 Postby cycloneye » Sat Feb 18, 2006 5:46 pm

The point of naming storms that are dangerous is to raise awareness and provide easier identification and tracking therefore I favor naming sub-tropical systems.

What is your opinion about this question? Let's have many votes in this poll.

Dont forget that the most important poll will start on March 15,the official storm2k forecast numbers poll.

Yes, though it must be with names from the main list (like it is now), none of the greek letter stuff from the 70s. That makes things confusing if a storm transitions from tropical to subtropical or vice-versa.

I favor naming them and using names from the name list. The reason is because subtropical systems often become tropical.

Yes I prefer naming the subtropical storms, with the names we name the tropical ones with.

I favor naming them. As was stated earlier subtropical systems frequently evolve into pure tropical systems. The differences between the two arent all that great anyway, especially if you are in the path of one.

Subtropical systems, like Epsilon, Delta, and Zeta, can be very interesting systems. By the way, if we leave them out, the season will not be all that fun!

they should be numbered, but with advisories written, like prior to 2002.

Once the winds reach 65KT then they should be named as hurricanes

Not sure about this, I'd rather they were only named when fully tropical. You don't have to name storms to raise awareness of it. If we named all the depressions that tracked over here during the year the list would be rather long.

No, I dont think they should get a name until they go purely tropical. Advisories should be issued and they should get a number just like tropical depressions do until they become pure tropical storms or hurricanes.

Yes I think they should be named. They can be quite destructive, take the "Halloween/Perfect Storm" of 1991 for example. The low center that was created from the merging of Grace and the Nor'Easter was subtropical for most of it's life span, and eventually even became 100% tropical, the only reason it wasn't "named" was to prevent confusion with one of it's parent lows Grace.

Most named subtropical storms end up becoming tropical before their lifespan is through, just like tropical depressions. I personally think they should just number them until they become tropical. Yes, a subtropical storm can cause damage and injury, but so can a tropical depression. If you're in a small watercraft or a flood-prone area, you should be aware enough to be on the alert whenever a storm by any name comes into your area. If the winds get above 65kts, classify it as whatever you want, and give it a name.

I mean, I just didn't like Subtropical Storm Nicole. :x

I think they should be named since they can cause as much damage as any tropical system. Furthermore, I think we have created like a system in which people associate menacing tropical cyclones with names. Numbers don't appeal too much to the public awareness. The other problem with numbers is that if you have two landfalling systems in different years with the same numbers, then you have to remember the number and the year. For example, look at these conversations with numbers and then with names. Numbers: "Do you remember the first subtropical storm of 2007 that made landfall in the panhandle." "Yes, but it wasn't as impressive as the first subtropical storm of 2009 that damaged very severely the Outer Banks." Names: "Do you remember tropical storm Andrea that made landfall in the panhandle." "Yes, but it wasn't as impressive as tropical storm Ana that damaged very severely the Outer Banks." I think numbers are very unpractical for memory purposes.
