What is the worst winter storm you have ever gone through?

For me it has to be the Jan. 25th, 2000 blizzard in Raleigh, NC. I recieved 24" of snow at my home in just 10-16 hrs! It was one of the craziest experiences of my life. The snow did not fully melt for 12+ days and on Jan. 30th a coating of freezing rain fell covering the snow in a layer of ice. I can still remember the snow coming down at rates of over 4" an hour at times, you could not see anything! The funny thing is that the night before they were only expecting 1-3"...boy were they wrong.

For me it was the March 1993 Superstorm. Had 12 inches and 4ft snow drifts. In NW Atlanta suburbs.

Blizzard of 1993. I don't remember how much we got exactly but it was at least 6-7 inches... there were drifts as high as 3 feet though. Places on the Southside of Birmingham saw 13".

2 seprate storms, both dropped 2.5 feet of snow on the valley floor which is rare, and above 7000ft, it ranged from a total of 6-20feet

Sorry folks, there is no such thing as a "worst" winter storm. BEST winter storm? I guess that would have to cover the entire month of February 1978. I seem to remember only about 5 days of school the entire month.
I remember one storm as a kid, it was forecasted as flurries, and I remember it being measured in feet, but it had an ice crust on the top of it. I remember walking to the edge of where my dad was shoveling and he lifted me down on to the shoveled part so I could go play across the street at my friends house.

Blizzard of 96 and President's Day storm 2003 both gave me over 20", as well as a few I'm probably not thinking of. Blizzard of 93 fell just shy of 20".

I can't remember the last time we got more than 10 inches of snow from one storm. Southern Ontario sucks for winter.

Been in quite a few blizzards in Lake Tahoe where it's not measured in inches but feet! Also while living in Europe was a part of plenty of heavy snowfall events as well.

I love blizzard like conditions, but can do without actual white-out events. There was a time while sitting in a jacuzzi in Tahoe that we literally had to feel our way back to our room. Not a good feeling......

The biggest one for me was the halloween blizzard of 1991, I was too young to remember it (4 at the time, 19 now), but we got 28 inches. I seem to recall remembering so much snow we couldnt get our door open, maybe that was the storm..hmm..

Yea, a few weeks ago i went up to Tahoe City during a storm. It wasnt that bad until I started heading to Truckee via 89. It was to the point that i could hardly see the car in front of me. It was crazy.

For me it was the January Blizzard of 96. I was up in the mountains of VA when the storm hit. We went there expecting 6 to 12 inches and got 36" with 6 foot drifts. Had to hike 3 miles to the nearest paved road. Didn't get my truck back for 2 weeks.

March 14, 1984-

a coastal storm dumped very heavy snow over northern New England. Caribou, Maine received 28.6 inches of snow in 24 hours, by far its greatest 24 hour snowfall on record. 36 inches of snow fell at Telos Lake, Maine. Some sections of Vermont recorded 30 inches and up to 26 inches fell in portions of New Hampshire.

I was living in Auburn. A naive college student that just couldn't believe that the beautiful weather in the mid 70s was about to change for the worse. We all decided to take a trip that March up to Lake Martin and camp out for the weekend despite what the weather man was saying. A snow blizzard for Alabama in March. Yea sure. Well that night it started to blow. I not talking about a slight blow. A blow that knocked down trees and power lines. The temperatures started to drop. By midnight it started to get scary. We were trapped. No power, not enough food, and no way out. The roads were blocked. And snow was falling.

The next morning we woke up freezing. The fire in the camp house had gone out. We went to look out the window and saw snow up to 5inches in some places. Being a southern girl from south Alabama I was in heaven. I had never seen so much snow. It is kept falling through out the morning. By mid afternoon when the snow stopped falling there were places near the camp that had 8 to 10 inches drifts.

Someone came down with a four wheeler that knew that a group of college kids were partying and brought us some food. He even stopped and ate with us. Then they started to try to clear the main road into the camp area for us. By the next morning we were going to Auburn on wet, slippery roads. What a weekend. If you haven't guess this was the Blizzard of 93 in March. Yes, I was in that one.

The biggest storm for me occurred from December 25-31, 2003. Salt Lake City International received 21.9 inches of snow during this period, including 10.6 inches on the 26th. My house in eastern Salt Lake City received 28-30 inches of snow, but, there was a downside, since I lost my power for 4 and a half days. It was one of the largest storms ever along the Wasatch Front. This was the NWS statement for the event. Note the 103 inches (!) in Farmington Canyon.

Plenty of storms make my list-

Bald Eagle (4 day storm in 2001) dropped 127" (over 10 feet) in Montague, NY (about a half hour south of me). My house picked up about 4 and a half feet.

Two storms in 2004 in rapid succession, one dumped 86" in Parish with snow falling in excess of 6-8"/hour at times. Very interesting stuff, I still have pictures of people shoveling snow off of their roofs!
