NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HUNTSVILLE AL

...AREAS OF SNOW MOVING INTO THE TENNESSEE VALLEY...
.AN UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM DROPPING INTO THE TENNESSEE
VALLEY OVERNIGHT WILL PRODUCE SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS SNOW SHOWERS.
THESE WILL PRODUCE ONE OR MORE BRIEF BURSTS OF MODERATE SNOWFALL
OVER MUCH OF THE AREA.

...SNOW ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM CST SUNDAY...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HUNTSVILLE HAS ISSUED A SNOW
ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM CST SUNDAY.
INCREASING SNOW SHOWERS IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE WILL DROP SOUTH INTO
MUCH OF NORTH ALABAMA OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. THIS WILL
RESULT IN PERIODS OF SNOW ACROSS MUCH OF THE ADVISORY
AREA...ESPECIALLY EAST OF INTERSTATE 65. ACCUMULATIONS OF AN INCH
OR LESS ARE POSSIBLE. A FEW ISOLATED LOCATIONS HAVE ALREADY
RECEIVED ONE TO ONE AND ONE HALF INCHES OF SNOW LATE SATURDAY
AFTERNOON AND EARLY THIS EVENING. ALTHOUGH MOST OF THE ACCUMULATION
WILL BE ON GRASSY AREAS...SOME ROADS WILL BECOME SLUSHY AND VERY
SLICK.
A SNOW ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE PRIMARILY
TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR RAPID DROPS IN VISIBILITY IN
SHORT DISTANCE DUE TO THESE SNOW SHOWERS. SNOW COVERED ROADS AND
LIMITED VISIBILITIES PROMPT CAREFUL DRIVING TONIGHT.

Yeah...that's what I thought. I'm worried about the "if they hold together" part. I'm kind of figuring that by the time they get down to the central part of NW GA, they'll have fallen apart and won't amount to anything.
Still haven't seen a flake or flurry one here.

Lowpressure wrote:I am not expecting much here. NWS really missed this one in our area. Black ice in the morning ride to Church may end up being the biggest story of the storm for Charlotte Metro.
It does look like a bust for your part of the world. I'm sort of glad we didn't get the predictions others got--only to see them bust. Nashville springs to mind....they got rain, instead of the couple of inches of snow that had been predicted earlier.

The AJC is saying black ice for tomorrow morning is likely the biggest problem here too.
Guess we'll just have to see how things go tonight through sunrise.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PEACHTREE CITY GA
924 PM EST SAT FEB 11 2006
.UPDATE...
WRAPAROUND MOISTURE BRINGING SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF COLD AIR
STRATOCU INTO THE AREA. HAVE HAD A FEW REPORTS OF FLURRIES ACROSS
NORTHWESTERN ZONES...AND UPSTREAM OFFICES HAVE HAD MINOR SNOW
ACCUMULATIONS. TEMPERATURE/DEWPOINT SPREAD STILL LARGE ENOUGH TO
ALLOW A GOOD PORTION OF ANY SNOW THAT FALLS TO SUBLIMATE...BUT
WOULDN`T BE SURPRISED TO SEE FLURRIES OR...WORST CASE SCENARIO...EVEN A DUSTING AS FAR SOUTH AS THE ATLANTA METRO AREA ONCE THE BOUNDARY LAYER SATURATES. HOWEVER...BY THIS TIME...THE SYSTEM MAY BE PULLING FURTHER TO THE NORTHEAST...LIMITING UPPER MOISTURE AVAILABILITY. WILL HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE ON THE SNOW SHOWERS THAT ARE ALREADY OUT THERE...AND IF THE ADVISORY NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED
SOUTHWARD ANOTHER TIER OR TWO OF COUNTIES...WE WILL DO SO.
MADE MINOR ADJUSTMENTS TO TEMPERATURES...ESPECIALLY SOUTH...AS
IN THAT AREA UNDER CLEAR SKIES TEMPS WERE DROPPING MORE QUICKLY
THAN FORECAST. ALSO...BASED ON RADAR AND SATELLITE TRENDS...ADJUSTED
POPS TO INTRODUCE SLIGHT CHANCE -SN FURTHER SOUTH EARLY TONIGHT.
GRADIENT IS DECREASING BY THE HOUR ACROSS THE AREA. WINDS ARE NO
LONGER MEETING ADVISORY CRITERIA...AND AS THE SURFACE LOW
CONTINUES TO PULL AWAY...WHILE WINDS MAY REMAIN BREEZY...THEY
SHOULD REMAIN BELOW CRITERIA. CANCELATION NOTICE...AND UPDATED
ZONES...WILL BE OUT SHORTLY.

Here north of the ATL perimeter, I experienced two "snow grain" (hard like sleet but white instead of clear) showers at around 5-6 PM. At 8:15 PM, I had a nice snow flurry. Nothing has stuck as we're still ~34.5 F. Interesting weather.

Update from Peachtree City, GA:
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PEACHTREE CITY GA
1002 PM EST SAT FEB 11 2006
.UPDATE...
AFTER RECEIVING REPORTS OF SNOW BEGINNING TO ACCUMULATE AS FAR
SOUTH AS CHEROKEE COUNTY...HAVE DECIDED TO EXPAND THE WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY FURTHER SOUTH. THE DIFFICULTY IS THAT THERE SEEMS
TO BE A MAIN SNOW BAND THAT HAS SET UP THAT STRETCHES PRETTY MUCH
ALONG I-75 AND WILL GRADUALLY MOVE EAST. THERE ARE A FEW OTHER
SNOW SHOWERS OUT THERE...BUT HAVE HAD REPORTS OF +SN IN THIS
PARTICULAR BAND. ADVISORY WILL NOW STRETCH FROM POLK...TO NORTH
FULTON...TO JACKSON COUNTY. OVERALL...I DOUBT THAT MUCH MORE THAN
A DUSTING...IF THAT...WILL ACCUMULATE OUTSIDE OF THIS BAND...ESPECIALLY
IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE ADVISORY.

And now we're under a Winter Weather Advisory. Still haven't seen a single flake yet.
From the sounds of the updated discussion, it's not likely--since we're not near that band that has left minor accumulations.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PEACHTREE CITY HAS ISSUED A
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM EST
SUNDAY.
SNOW SHOWERS HAVE DEVELOPED ACROSS NORTHERN GEORGIA...AND
TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO BE AT OR BELOW FREEZING OVERNIGHT.
SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF UP TO AN INCH CAN BE EXPECTED...MAINLY ON
GRASSY OR ELEVATED SURFACES...GENERALLY ALONG AND NORTH OF A LINE
FROM CEDARTOWN...TO ROSWELL...TO JACKSON. THIS MAY MAKE TRAVEL
DIFFICULT ON BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES AND SOME SECONDARY ROADS.
A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW...SLEET...OR
FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR
SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE
DRIVING.

I just went outside... very tiny flakes are flying around in the air. Have to look at a light to see them. The tops of all the vehicles have just a VERY light dusting of snow. Nothing on the ground yet and it's going to have to pick up in intensity to do that.
Ground is covered up in Oxford which is an hour NW and that snow band is moving down here, so I'm hopeful...

I woke at 8:30 and saw a light dusting was on the ground, including the grass not in the sunshine.
As of ~9 AM, it has become cloudy and radar suggests we're about to get another snow shower.

And here's the latest update from FFC:

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PEACHTREE CITY GA
1000 AM EST SUN FEB 12 2006
.UPDATE...
CONTINUING TO GET REPORTS OF SNOW SHOWERS AND FLURRIES THIS MORNING WITH VISIBILITIES REDUCED TO 2 TO 3 MILES FOR A TIME IN NORTH GA. NEW ACCUMULATIONS UP TO 1/4" BEING REPORTED BUT MOST MAIN ROADS ARE FINE. SINCE ROAD PROBLEMS ARE MAINLY DUE TO REFREEZING AND LESS THAN 1/2" NEW ACCUMULATION IN FAR NORTH...WILL REFRAIN FROM ISSUING
ANOTHER ADVISORY FOR REST OF TODAY. PLEASE REFER TO SPECIAL WEATHER
STATEMETNS AND SHORT TERM FORECASTS FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION.
MODEL DATA DOES NOT SUGGEST THIS WILL CLEAR UP MUCH THIS AFTERNOON
AND CERTAINLY NOT TONIGHT AS NEXT WAVE SWINGS THROUGH. 900-800MB RH
AROUND 75PCT THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON INCREASES TO 90PCT OVERNIGHT
BEFORE CLEARING OUT MONDAY MORNING. STRONGLY CONSIDERING ANOTHER
ADVISORY TONIGHT FOR SNOW SHOWERS ACCUMULATING UP TO 1" ACROSS NRN 1/2 OF CWA. WILL LOOK AT 12Z MODELS...BUT THOSE ARENT LIKELY TO
CHANGE MUCH FROM EARLIER RUNS.

ga_ben wrote:I was just about to ask if it was coming down pretty good in your neck of the woods. Looks like a nice shower right over you. Enjoy and glad you are getting some of the white stuff.
Hmmm.

We're between showers. Sun is peeking out a bit. But looks like some darkish clouds are approaching. I guess this will be going on all afternoon?
