The problem is that there's no way to know if you've successfully destroyed all of their facilities until you put boots on the ground.

Every able bodied person in Israel is in the army. EVERYONE !! IMHO, Iran is the greatest threat to Israel, they have professed a desire to see Israel removed from the face of the earth, they have threatened to put Israel into a "Eternal Coma" and they have even stated that the holocaust was a fraud. I cannot see Israel waiting for a country, that already has the capability to rain missles onto their cities, to build a nuclear weapon to put on those same missles.

WHile I believe that there are no good outcomes to this crisis, the idea of a nuclear armed Iran really scares me. I think that the folks in the US who wish for "Peace through appeasement" need to get their head out of the sand and pay attention to exactly what is going on in the Middle East and think of the long term consequences of inaction.

I think there will be military action against Iran. In my mind the only questions are which nations are involved, when it will begin, and how far will it escalate. I think the writing is already on the wall on this one.

Ahmadinejad: Israel 'will be removed'

Tehran (dpa) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Saturday that the Palestinians and "other nations" will eventually remove Israel from the region.

Addressing a mass demonstration in Tehran - one of many organized throughout Iran to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the Islamic revolution - he once again questioned the Holocaust "fairy tale".

"We ask the West to remove what they created sixty years ago and if they do not listen to our recommendations, then the Palestinian nation and other nations will eventually do this for them," Ahmadinejad said in a ceremony marking the 27th anniversary of the Islamic revolution.

"Do the removal of Israel before it is too late and save yourself from the fury of regional nations," the ultra-conservative president said. He once again called the Holocaust a "fairy tale" and said Europeans have become hostages of "Zionists" in Israel.

He also accused Europeans for not allowing "neutral scholars" to investigate in Europe and make a scientific report on "the truth about the fairy tale of Holocaust."

"How comes that insulting the prophet of Muslims worldwide is justified within the framework of press freedom, but investigating about the fairy tale Holocaust is not?" Ahmadinejad said.

"The real Holocaust is what is happening in Palestine where the Zionists avail themselves of the fairy tale of Holocaust as blackmail and justification for killing children and women and making innocent people homeless," Ahmadinejad said.

I'm not sure where you got that information. But not everyone is in the Army. Everyone does there time by doing several years of conscripted services. But not everyone is in the Army. I've been there more than a few times and know lots of able-bodied people who are not in the Army.

Maybe Army is not the right word maybe militia.
or I could be wrong
Tim

I did find this explanation about who serves in the army.
Who serves in the army?
Israel is unique in that military service is compulsory for both males and females. It is the only country in the world that maintains obligatory military service for women. This continues the tradition of female fighters during Israel's War of Independence. Males serve for three years and females for just less than two years. Israel also has one of the highest recruitment rates in the world - some 80% of those who receive summons serve. Those who are exempt from service include most minority groups, those who are not physically or psychologically fit, married women or women with children, religious males who are studying in an accredited Jewish Law institution and religious females who choose to pursue 'national service' - community work.
Reserve Forces
Israel's small population means the country has never had the security of a large standing army despite the immense security and terrorist risks it faces. For that reason, released soldiers continue serving as reservists into their early 50s, contributing up to over a month's worth of service each year, both training and active service. The army reserves constitute the backbone of the army's manpower needs. It is not rare in Israel for two generations to be serving simultaneously in the army - the son obligatory service and the father in reserves

IMHO, the palestinians are a real problem but do not have the military might to seriously threaten Israel. Iran, even with conventional weapons, is a bigger threat.

I am curious though about your impression of the country of Israel. Is it a paranoid and scary place or is the country more laid back. It is hard to get a good read on the country from press reports and articles.
