Tom Karl, director of the National Climatic Data Center reported today that "there's a significant probability that January will be the warmest January on record across the USA." The lack of any cold outbreaks in the lower 48 throughout the month will more than make up for the unusual cold that Alaska has been experiencing. Final data about the warmth won't be available from the NCDC until the second week of February. (Reporting from the annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society in Atlanta.)

Warmest January On Record
There's a reason why many South Dakotans have been eyeing their golf clubs more than their snow skis the past month.
National Weather Service officials say it was the warmest January on record across the state. Average temperatures in many towns shattered previous records by as much as 7.8 degrees.
Final numbers are still being tabulated. But Rapid City, Sioux Falls and a slew of towns in between have already broken records. Some of them date back more than 85 years.
Other cities setting new marks are Pierre, Aberdeen, Mitchell, Huron, Mobridge, Oelrichs and Winner.

Warmest January In Wisconsin Since 1880
(AP) The warmer-than-usual temperatures in Wisconsin this past month are of historic proportions.
Record keepers say it's the warmest start to a year since 1880.
U-W Madison research meteorologist Scott Bachmeier says it's pretty amazing given the magnitude of how much warmer it is compared to normal.
An entrenched jet stream is causing the moderate temperatures. Meteorologists say it's trapped Arctic air north of the United States and has been in place since December 22nd.
Bachmeier says computer models suggest a change coming in mid-February, when some of that Arctic air could move south into Wisconsin.
The warm pattern has set a record for consecutive winter days with a high temperature above 30. That streak is now at 42 days in southern Wisconsin. The previous record was 31 days, in the winter of 1931-'32.

The Philadelphia Inquirer posted that we may not necessarily see a colder February. There have been several analog years that showed a warmer than normal January followed by a warmer than normal February.
However, this February will likely average below normal for most of the eastern 2/3rds of the country. It will be a shock for many.

drezee wrote:I am not a big global warming guy, but geez it has been warmer than it used to be in winter. DCA for example hasn't had a avg monthly temp below 30F in January since 1948. Before 1948, they had 8!
Also,
40F+ avg January temps: 1871 - 1948 (77 years): 10
After 1948 (58 years): 11 (including this year)
Also some hope for 2006, 70% of the time when the avg in Jan was 40F+...the following Feb was cooler than January.
25% of the time it was at least 5F cooler
