Alaskan Air on the Move?

#1 Postby Valkhorn » Sun Jan 29, 2006 3:42 am

I just took a few looks at the arctic air pocket that was in Alaska for so long. It has now jumped over the Yukon and has reached the NWT and Nunavut of Canada:

If you take a look at Fort Yukon, AK's temperatures for the month you can see that the very cold air arrived around the 23rd and is still holding on strong:

Now in Colville Lake, NWT you can see it bled in 3 days later on the 26th:

You can also see the same thing in Little Chicago, NWT:

So does this mean anything? There is no question to me that the very cold arctic air is now on the move and is now no longer confined to Alaska. It is now in Western Canada.

Is this a sign?

EDIT: I should also add that the NWT Hasn't really been _that_ cold compared to Alaska until the past few days, wheres Alaska has had at least one other decent cold spell earlier in the month.

Interesting observations! :D

You bet its a sign. As a ridge builds to the west, and a trough settles down into the east, we watch and wait to see where this bitterly cold air will go. Will it bleed throughout the US all the south to the Gulf Coast, or will it only be for the northern plains and the northeast? We wait and watch.
