What Has Been The Worst Storms You've Experienced?

For me, the worst storms I have experienced have been (in this order) Wilma, Katrina, Frances, and Jeanne.

1. Charley (without power or water for over a week. Many trees and powerlines down with most store signs blown out and most billboards damaged or destroyed. Most shingled homes lost over 1/2 of thier shingles. Many pool screens damaged or destroyed...as well as fences. Most roads unpassable. Church steeple ripped off near my home.)

2. Jeanne (TS force winds for 24 hrs...hurricane force gusts for 3-5 hours. Lots of minor damage everywhere. Isolated trees and powerlines down. Without power for two days. Many leaves stripped from trees...many loose items blown around or over.)

3. Rita (TS force winds for about 8 hrs. Lots of minor damage due to the area not getting a hurricane in over 20 years. Lots of tree foilage blown out and a few small to medium trees knocked over. Loose items and small signs blown around. Back yard palm tree bent by wind. Neighbor behind me lost 2 small trees and one medium trees as well as 2 birdhouses. Lost power for 2 days.)

4. Frances (TS force winds for over 36 hrs. Seemed like it would never end! Lots of minor damage with isolated trees and powerlines downed. Never lost power. Lots of rain. Very annoying.)

5. Floyd (weak TS force winds with gusts to 50-60mph in Raleigh. Enough to knock over a large oak in my backyard and cause it to land on our fence and rip up a good portion of it. some shingles lost on homes in the area as well as a few branches downed. One or two other trees I also remember down.)

This is an interestingly different question than the "what's the strongest hurricane you've experienced" poll.

For me, #1 is definitely the same - Andrew.

But my #2 would be lowly TS Chris in 1988 - not because it was anywhere near the second strongest storm I've experienced, but because I was caught in a bad place - sailing singlehanded in the Bahamas. I was unbelievably lucky (OK, skill had something to do with it ) to get through that one alive.

#3 would be Wilma.

#4 Katrina, maybe - we're getting down into the strong TS category where I rode it out, so really there's a 3 or 4 way tie.

Should give honorable mention to TS Dennis in 1981 too - not that the winds were impressive, but the rain was beyond belief. Plenty of little tormados in that one too - at one point I saw 4 tornados simultaneously all within a couple of miles.

I have been very lucky. I have not seen the type of catastrophic or severe
damage that many have seen in this active cycle since 1995.
The worst I have experienced ranges from Strong Tropical Storm
to Category 1 Hurricane...with isolated rare gusts well into hurricane force.


1. Hurricane Wilma Localized Isolated Damage due to a possible microburst (Right along the water near my location: Some Large Trees down, powerlines damaged, damage to shingles, some buildings with roof tiles damaged/ripped off- much worse for the eastern tampa bay since winds came out of the NE on the back quadrant- winds came UNHINDERED off Tampa Bay) This damage was very isolated. I experienced very strong winds...but this damage was isolated.

2. Hurricane Jeanne (not as bad as Wilma because winds blew out into the bay, unlike wilma where winds came right off the bay; but some structural damage)
3. Hurricane Dennis (damage to pool area due to very high winds in outer
bands)
4. Hurricane Frances (ripped off some of my roof tiles, same reasons as Jeanne, though less intense)
5. Hurricane Gabrielle 2001 (large trees down, debris of branches lining the street, wind damage)
6. Hurricane Gordon 2000 (minor wind damage)

Worst storms I've Experienced:

1: Charley no power from Friday night to Tuesday afternoon, all food in refrigerator spoiled, trees down in neighborhood

2. Jeanne Power out for a few hours, some food spoilage.

3 Frances: Power flickered but didn't go out, cable out for a couple of days.

4 David: Wasn't really bad at all, just a rainy day off from school.

1. frances took back of house off no power for 2+ weeks.

2. jeanne a bit more damage but not as much as frances power out for a week lost everything again

3. wilma lost power for 6-7 hours lots of tree braches down and street flooding

4. charley didnt loose power no issues just some rain and winds around 30 or so

2. Jeanne - Not bad but interesting sounds at night, in northern palm bch
3. Elena - Actually drove through this, long story.
4. Frances - This took way too long to move and could not go anywhere, no gas.

Isabel..hands down. No power at home for 5 days and no power at my job for 2 weeks..therefore no work. Two popular fishing piers in Hampton were destroyed and there were numerous homes damaged or destroyed by trees falling on them. Many areas near the water sustained considerable storm surge damage.

1- Ivan the terrible(alot of EVERYTHING) For so-o long too.
2- Erin (Got the eye..were inland so we got alot of wind and trees down)

By a long shot - Katrina! Everything else pales in comparison to the point where the is no comparison - and I've been in every storm to hit or impact Biloxi since 1965.

The wind was nothing (Georges and Elena were worse), but the 28+ surge will forever be embedded in my existence.

It kicked our butt ~five months ago, and it's still kicking it today...

Ivan would be my #1. I was in downtown Pensacola for it, and the winds were kickin near hurricane strength from the time we lost power at 10pm that night, until at least 4am the next morning, with gust of hurricane force lasting until daybreak.
