WOW..Pushing -65F to -70F in Alaska...WOW

#1 Postby Sean in New Orleans » Fri Jan 27, 2006 12:09 am

Lord have mercy...the frigid air from Siberia and Russia is shifting and now, we are only 10F from the coldest it's ever been in Alaska. This is some unbelievably brutal cold up there. Will it come down to the GOM? It will, but, it remains to be seen if it will be full force. It WILL be full force in two weeks in the Midwest and we can expect temps down to -10F to -15F all the way down to St. Louis, IMO. It's going to sock us....everything I see says so. With that said, keep in mind, this amateur forecaster doesn't consider models a forecast. It's less than 20% of my consideration. I study satellite for hours with pleasure and that is where I get my conclusion. It's all about satellite and thank God, for me, I love staring at every square inch of it for extended periods. And then, I step back and make my own fun conclusion. Then I see if the models agree with me. I don't see if I agree with models.

Wow! :froze: Thats some cold right there! This is the coldest January in Alaska in 35 years! Other parts of the globe are also experiencing a severe winter. And yet, the US is seeing its warmest January ever! Something tells me something is about to flip, and that winter may have one more trick in the bag before spring.

I don't know about -70°F but it's -56°F in Fort Yukon, AK right now and forecasted to get as low as -65°F. It could be colder in other areas though. I just checked a few cities.

Could that frigid air move east and completely miss the US or will it slip southward and get us all. It's possible it could miss us in the deep south and just clip the northeast US.

Southern Ontario, Canada...specifically Toronto...is also experiencing it's warmest Januarys on record...with no snow cover on the ground at all anywhere in the city...and has been like this for the most part of the month.

Suffice to say, the city of Toronto has been saving a bundle on its salt/sand/snow removal budget this January.
So we are watching that intense cold up in Alaska with one eye..and hoping it doesn't march south anytime soon.

See the problem is that the air in Alaska is supposed to moderate during the next week or so, and sit around in northern canada and northern alaska for a while, so even if it were to come down here it would be moderated highly. I just dont see a arctic outbreak this year. Itll cool down, but I dont see anything terrible.

Yes it could easily if a block isn't set up to shunt it more South than East. And as stated above, it will have moderates somewhat by the time it moves into the US depending on how long it sits before it moves, among other things.

At 10am Eastern, it is 50 below at Fairbanks. BRRR...all I can say is I hope it modifies enough so it doesn't go below zero here.

I don't think it will moderate too much. Check out the 7 day ECMWF, it has been consistent on the cold continuing to build in Alaska and Northern Canada for several days now.

The upper air pattern of today's Ensembles favor the arctic air coming down around the 10th of the month. The upper flow will be favorable for the arctic air to overwhelm everything east of the Rockies at that time, assuming the air mass is still in place.
