Question about tropical waves

#1 Postby boca » Tue Jan 24, 2006 10:30 pm

I know about hearing about the 1st tropical wave traversing the Atlantic around mid to late May. Is this normal to have a wave in the Caribbean in mid to late Jan or is this normal but highly underadvertised.

It will be very difficult to have a tropical wave in mid January since at this time the ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone) is usually very far to the south. What we had in the Western Caribbean for the last days or so was a trough of low pressure that separated from a cold front and in an environment of light shear and high moisture, and relatively high sea-surface temperatures convection flared. If we were in the hurricane season, this could have developed a low pressure and could have become a TD or TS.

No problem, every question is an opportunity for those that know the answer to reflesh their memories and for those that don't know it to learn something new! I think I got this "teaching habit" from my parents, they were both professors in Cuba!
