We are screaming racism now.

Yeah, but if it would have been a white mayor saying vanilla, then the whole country would be in uproar and the guy would be forced to resign, like within days, if not hours.

You know it. Where is the ACLU on this? Haven't heard a peep out of them on this one.

No kidding! Shouldn't they be making loud noises and stomping their feet in outrage?

Although it's HUGE down here, it doesn't really seem to be getting much press other than a cursory mention here or there outside of the local area (i.e. nationally).

I've seen it on all of the national news websites. Including the drudgereport.com

Right, but there doesn't seem to be a repetitious urgency to it, like with other news stories today (thus my use of the word 'cursory'). We're paying attention to it because it's near and dear to us, but it likely won't even register with people in other states farther away.

True HurryKane. My god-daughter is in Atlanta, and she said she is so embarrassed by this.

You got that right. I've been on some pretty strong pain meds the past week, and they first time I heard his remarks I just sat there going "I know I didn't just hear him say that - gotta be the meds".

Nagin is one that needs to learn and take to heart the saying: "Loose lips sink ships." :(

I still can't beleive Nagin said this. The media is giving Nagin He11 and he deserves it. I use to think he was a good mayor but after the Katrina fisaco and not this comment I don't know. I wonder who the next mayor of New Olreans will be. Really, Nagin sould resign. Trent Lott didn't say anything this bad and look what it got him. A definite double standard IMO......MGC

yeah...if he gets re-elected I will be shocked. I would also be quite upset. I don't think comments like the ones he made should be taken lightly, because if they are then a door is opened to anyone else who feels they want to make similar comments. In today's day and age you would think that racism was a thing of the past...I guess not...

You can thank the liberal media for that one. A Democrat racist like Nagin can do no wrong.

Well, apparently I was wrong--the national media is running with it pretty hard, at least on broadcast media.

Boy, now those types of thoughtful, well-reasoned and responsible comments are just what are needed to reassure Congress that relief appropriations will be placed in good hands, huh?

Nice going Ray.

EXACTLY!

And it's a shame, too; because my memories of living IN the Ninth Ward are among the dearest I hold. I lived a few blocks from Fats Domino's house on Caffin Avenue, in a very mixed neighborhood. It's sad that everything today if relegated to the race card. I drove through my old neighborhood, looking at the devastation, and my old Alma Mater (St. Maurice Church/School) and it practically broke my heart. The tall belltower spire on this church that has been there since 1854 is completely blown off. The area is in ruin. May God have mercy on these souls and bring back the truly cosmopolitan flavor that has made New Orleans such a unique city in and of itself. Perhaps Mr. Nagin should have said "Neapolitan" at least THAT would have been closer to the truth.
