What's the deal with snakes?

#1 Postby sunny » Mon Jan 09, 2006 11:57 am

Why do people want them for pets? I found out that I have not one, but THREE snakes in my apartment building. Boas. I am not a happy camper at this point in time. Can someone explain the fascination to me?

I don't care for snakes period! As for spiders...just not the black widows, brown recluses and tarantulas!

Well, I found out that Dale just got a boa. His is a baby (like that really matters). Apparently my reaction hurt his feelings. ANYWAY, the guy across from him, Wayne, has two BIG ones. He didn't want me to find out because he knows I am terrified of them. I found out anyway. The apartment management found them during the evacuation. Catch is, as long as they are contained, they can have them! They do not make noise and they do not make a mess, so they can have them! I am so freaked out right now.

I heard somewhere that pets are a reflection of the owner.

I starting collecting snakes when I was 5...Since then I have captured and sold hundreds and have had many as a pet...But I don't believe people should classify them as pets...They are always wild...The act on natural instinct... When the feel threaten they will strike, they only have one defense and that would be to bite...Although only the venomous snakes can cause you harm..I've been bitting hundreds of times by non venomous snakes and have no problems...For people that were not told at a early age that snakes are bad, find out that are truly unique some very colorful and some very powerful... I just ask people to let them live instead of chopping them up..If you have a venomus snake in your yard and feel that you or your family is in danger by all means do what you have to do. I would..

I've already warned both Dale and Wayne - if those things get into the pipes and come my way, they WILL become a pair of shoes and matching hand bag.

'course they laugh and hug me and tell me they would never let the snakes hurt me. They think its funny.

In apartments they do get into the plumbing...Unfortunately the usually die in the pipes causing a huge plumbing problem..

errrr, I beg to differ, Digger, my bearded dragon, he does cuddle and even pets you back :D

But I can't see the fascination with snakes, they don't scare me, but they don't have that endearing factor that beardies do.

Cindy, :)

You would probably enjoy a Betta fish or two...my folks and I have 2 males Rocky and Stitch that we enjoy! :D You have to keep 'em separated though or they'll fight to the death!

We got them, their bowls and colored rocks and other care supplies at PetSmart. :)

We celebrated our 1st anniversary with them this past October! :D

Hi Amy, :)

I've heard from 1-3 years, too. I've seen one at a doctor's waiting room...and also at a pharmacy office one time where my folks and I got flu shots this past October. :) Their fish (both places) were in a bowl with a small plant inside...roots down in the water!

One of our's Stitch is all blue like your daughter's Clifford! :D

Cindy - I don't understand the appeal of having a pet snake either. I want somethng soft and cuddly, that will respond back. Yes I know snakes will but I'm talking 4 legged, furry creatures. Dogs/cats! My mom has a parakeet and I can't even get into them. I know she's attached to him, he's companionship, and her apt. manager allows birds. Still, I'd rather have a dog or cat! But I don't just get having a snake either. I much prefer them in their natural habitat too - that opinion I'm sure comes as of no surprise to some! LOL

I'm just completely freaked out Mary. And I've been told by several people that they CAN get out of their cages or aquariums or whatever. I've heard of people putting bricks and things on top to keep them in. I'm just very freaked out right now (hush Kent!).

Yes, they do get out. Bricks or not. They won't hurt you though. Managed a pet store for a few years, we had one get out. Took us weeks to catch him. Always knew in the morning where he had been, by the things knocked off of the shelves, finally one day we went to get something off of a top shelf and there he was. Fortunately for him the mice are just as difficult to keep in their tanks!

Mary, as for birds, most people don't realize how much personality they really do have. They bond with their owners, show affection, anger and display personality. We had a Nanday Conure at the pet shop that used to throw peanuts at me whenever I was cleaning the bird room. We had honest to goodness arguments. We also had a Macaw that I hand fed as a baby who was sweet as pie, loved to snuggle (just had to watch that he hadn't been eating hot peppers before he started snuggling and rubbing his beak on my cheek!).

Personally I wouldn't choose to have a snake as a pet, but to each his/own on pets, so long as their pets don't harm anyone, and they aren't abusing the pets.

I've lived in the country - in the woods - and, I've had
the outdoor honor of being introduced to snakes. I always
loved to meet the black snake - we had a moment of quiet
conversation as I walked along beside it - you kill
the poisonous snakes, and, I will never bother you...
you can live here, and, I will walk around you, and leave
you to live and flourish. I never saw a poisonous snake
out there. For a pet in the house? No. But, I agree - to
each his own desires.
