I don't think that's good news at all. That's a week for viruses to multiply and propagate. A week is an eternity in computer cycle time.

"It's basically almost any Windows PC right now that you
can compromise if you can trick a person to going to
the wrong Web site or opening the wrong e-mail,"
Maiffret said.

Don't open attachments for a while, no matter who they
are from.

I'll just chill out and delete.

I'm just gonna file all e-mail pieces with attachments under "Questionable" for now until the problem's totally resolved.

hackers will always find a way to infiltrate software no matter who makes it. With all due respect. Can you ever say anything positive?? Thats what virus programs are for. After what others have been through this year..a computer virus seems small in comparison.

If Mac's or any other OS ever become as popular as Windows, they'll start getting hit with this junk too.

I think this isn't correct. If every computer in the world ran linux, you would not see 1/10 the number of viri that go around because of microsoft. This is simply wrong. The reason why microsoft is easy to crack is because they do not have their source code available, which means that bugs and errors remain hidden from the community. Also, microsoft tries to integrate all its software like IE and outlook into their OS, in ways that facilitate the virus makers. Microsoft designs bad software, its that simple. Every other day my computer crashes because of some silly bug, but the redhat box beneath my desk has been running for the better part of a year without a single crash.

Microsoft windows is in a way a gigantic malware package, its just so many good programs (games) were made for it I can't ignore it completely.

Unfortunately millions of people have, and businesses have suffered in many situations, and in a few cases government services were slowed because of security glitches which Microsoft released into the community. It is astonishing that microsoft hides its source code because of trade secrets, while Linux allows anyone with the requisite knowledge the ability to look at every single program feature. Which one should be easier to exploit? Practical sense says that it should be easier to crack the linux system, but the majority of web services run off of linux for a reason. Its a safer way on running services on the internet.

Not that microsoft is completely evil, they are adapting to the world in some measure. But a week to find a fix? Don't they have mountain dew over there in their geek facilities?

FYI

List of Virus Scanner that will catch malicious files that use the new Windows exploit

Test results
AV-Test took a range of antivirus products and ran 206 malicious files that exploit the unpatched WMF flaw through them. Some of the products have holes, it turned out.

These products detected all the malicious files:

BitDefender
Computer Associates eTrust-VET
F-Secure
Kaspersky Lab
McAfee
Eset Nod32
Microso OneCare
Sophos
Symantec
These missed just one file:

Alwil Avast
Clam AntiVirus
Aladdin eSafe
These tools missed a number of samples (total in parentheses):

Fortinet (18)
AntiVir (24)
eTrust-INO (25)
Panda (25)
Ikarus (26)
Norman (26)
Ewido (47)
AVG (59)
VirusBuster (61)
QuickHeal (63)
Trend Micro (63)
Dr Web (93)
VBA32 (110)
Authentium Command (119)
F-Prot (119)

Never open any attachment unless you know both who the sender is and exactly what the attachment is. Even then, never open an attachment unless you have a very strong antivirus suite and firewall installed.
