Mild Winter=Active Hurricane Season?

#1 Postby Ivanhater » Thu Jan 05, 2006 4:17 pm

Well with the unusually warm winter we are having so far, I would like to get some thoughts on how this might come into play for the 2006 Hurricane Season.

They way the water temps are and we are getting storms this time of year I am terrified at what 06 has to throw at us and I think the east coast will be the target this year. :(

Yes it was cold in December...
that was weird since July-September of 2005 was really hot,

I'm fearful that the hot gulf temps will return soon enough. All we need for another long summer is 85 degree plus temps and storms coming through the slot again like the last two seasons.

We've ducked some bullets thus far, but I fear our number is coming up.

Much of December was cold for everyone east of the Rockies, and then temperatures really rebounded right before Christmas. We still wound up with one of the colder December's on record, but it would have been a lot worse had it not warmed up.

So far January sucks.

Well Josh that may be but if you take a look at the water temps in the eastern and northern GOM they are well above normal for this time of year:

buoy 42039: 70F
buoy 42037: 68F
buoy 42003: 77F

I would expect these to fall some with the powerful cold front digging down this weekend (however on another note it's hyped up in my opinion as the coastal communites around Tampa Bay will barely get below the mid 40s for lows due to the warm Gulf water temps)....

As Boca Chris mentioned, a strong cold front is expected to drop temps into the thirties over much of Central Florida the next two nights, although the cold snap isn't expected to last long. It will be interesting to see what the water temps do.

I don't know... Last year (actually Christmas Day, 2004), it snowed and stuck here in Biloxi and elsewhere along the Gulf Coast from Texas to the FL Panhandle, which was very cool in more ways than one!!

Then the 2005 hurricane season kicked in with an unprecedented vengeance. So, I guess the answer is not as easy as one might think...

Watch out Texas for 2006 if your winter continues warm...

We may be entering a cycle of more extreme weather...with much
hotter summers and colder winters...

Tell me about it. We it's not unprecedented for us to have 70 degree weather for a couple of days, but we have been flirting with 80+ degree weather for WEEKS... My grass is starting to grown and spring flowers are blooming... Let's say this continues, the Texas coastal waters are going to be toasty well before Hurricane season.

Even last year, despite the snow in South Texas, it was a mild winter. The first half of January was really mild just like this year. The past several years winter in the South has been more like Fall. We have a very hard time being really cold for more than a few days... and we're really warm more days than we are cold.

The funny thing about the cold December is... the coldest air was technically during Fall. The last 10 days was above average.
