Israel's Sharon rushed to hospital

Updated: 3:37 p.m. ET Jan. 4, 2006
JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was rushed to a hospital on Wednesday after feeling ill, Sharon's office said.

Israeli media reported that he apparently suffered another stroke. The announcement said he was taken to Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital, where he was scheduled to undergo a heart procedure on Thursday.

Let's see if more information comes about his condition as 2 weeks ago he suffered a mild stroke.

Second stroke? Sharon feels ill, rushed by ambulance to Jerusalem hospital
By israelinsider staff and partners January 4, 2006

PM Ariel Sharon felt ill this evening and was rushed to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem by ambulance, accompanied by his security motorcade. Tomorrow he was to undergo a catheterization, but hospitalization was not planned this evening. He is currently enroute from his ranch near Sderot to Jerusalem. He was not taken to the closer Soroka Hospital in Beersheva. He is reported conscious and speaking, but a stroke is suspected.

There are reports that there was "pressure in his chest," according to Channel Ten. But Channel Two reports that a second stroke is the likely diagnosis according to which doctors at Hadassah are preparing to accept him.

He was not taken to the closer Soroka Hospital in Beersheva, nor was he taken in a helicopter. He is reportedly conscious and speaking.

He is accompanied by his sons Gilad and Omri, and Gilad's wife Inbal, as well as his personal physician.

No transfer of powers has yet been made to Vice-Premier Ehud Olmert, as was planned for his operation Thursday.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was rushed to Hadassah Ein Karem hospital in Jerusalem again late Wednesday night.

Sharon, according to Channel 10, reportedly was conscious, and able to speak, but had complained that he was suffering from weakness and he "felt ill."

Sharon reached the hospital and was carried in on a stretcher shortly before 11 p.m., and was admitted to the hospital's trauma ward.

The prime minister initially complained of feeling chest pressure and pain, and said that in general he wasn't feeling well.

Two Sharon associates said the prime minister was feeling unwell at his Negev ranch, and following a discussion with his personal doctor decided to be taken to hospital. He could have been taken to the closer Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, but it was decided to take him to the further Jerusalem hospital.

According to a Justice Ministry statement, Sharon was still the functioning prime minister.

His son Gilad was reportedly in the car with him, along with a physician, while his other son, MK Omri Sharon, arrived at the hospital as well.

After suffering a mild stroke 18 days ago, the prime minister had been scheduled to undergo a heart procedure Thursday morning.

However, the procedure was reportedly delayed due to the events of Wednesday evening.

The process was expected to be a 30 - 45 minute catheterization procedure to close a small hole in his heart, to be carried out at the Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem's Ein Kerem at 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

According to his spokesmen, he was to undergo a general anesthetic, and the entire process - from the time he was put under the anesthetic for the procedure to the time when he was expected to come out of it - was expected to take three hours.

During this period of time Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will take over as acting prime minister.

Sharon was expected to leave the hospital Friday morning for his Negev ranch, and return to his office either Sunday or Monday. On Monday he is scheduled to meet with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

If he's suffering massive bleeding in the brain that's not good... he's on a respirator and suffering from paralysis in the lower body.

Depends...there are ischemic strokes (TIA's) and there are hemorrhagic strokes. Most of the time, TIA's are caused by clots, not ruptures, of the vessels.

JERUSALEM

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Wednesday and was receiving breathing assistance while under general anesthetic, a hospital official said. Power was transferred to his deputy.

Sharon, 77, suffered a "significant" stroke and was brought to Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital from his ranch in the Negev desert, an official said. Channel 2 TV said Sharon was suffering from paralysis in his lower body and was taken into the hospital on a stretcher.

Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef, the hospital's director general, said Sharon was under general anesthetic and was receiving breathing assistance while doctors assessed his condition.

A few minutes later, Mor-Yosef emerged to say that initial tests showed Sharon had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, or bleeding in his brain.

Addressing reporters in English, Mor-Yosef said Sharon had "massive bleeding and was being transferred to an operating theater."

Cabinet Secretary Yisrael Maimon said Sharon's authority had been transferred to Vice Premier Ehud Olmert.

The latest health crisis came hours before Sharon was to undergo a procedure to seal a hole in his heart that contributed to a mild stroke on Dec. 18.

Sharon adviser Raanan Gissin told CNN the premier was attending meetings and went home to his ranch after suffering chest pains and weakness.

"In the presence of his doctor, and upon his advice, he said he should be taken to the hospital," Gissin said.

Sharon reportedly is 5-foot-7 and weighs more than 300 pounds, but doctors checking him last month said he otherwise was in good health. Since then, Sharon has lost several pounds while dieting, doctors said.

The dramatic downturn in Sharon's health comes as he runs for re- election on March 28 leading a new centrist party, Kadima. Sharon has a wide lead in the polls.

The party's strength is centered on Sharon himself, and if he were forced to leave the scene, Israel's political scene would be thrown into turmoil.

Sharon's office said his personal physician was with him at his ranch. He was taken by ambulance, a drive of more than an hour from his ranch in Israel's south, instead of by helicopter.

After his first stroke, doctors said Sharon would not suffer long-term effects, but they discovered a birth defect in his heart that apparently contributed to the stroke.

Since then, Sharon has been taking blood thinners.

Above is the latest news about this situation.

He didn't look good in that picture Luis posted either...

I remarked after the first minor stroke 2 1/2 weeks ago that he was lucky that wasn't worse. Being 77 and almost 300 lbs(and he's not tall at all) is a death sentence. A stroke just speeds it along.

Sounds like officials don't expect him to survive much longer... need a "miracle" apparently.

FOX NEWS Radio has reported that he is now in a medically induced coma. I am not medically savvy so I don't know what that really means in terms of his overall condition.
