Tournament of Roses Parade

#1 Postby wx247 » Sun Jan 01, 2006 11:11 am

Has it already been on? Did I miss it? Surely not... it would only be 8 a.m. out there. Maybe it starts later this year? Am I losing it? (Don't answer that last one!) :A:

Wonder why they're breaking tradition by not having it New Year's Day this year?

The Rose Bowl is the National Championship for college football this year, and I think they wanted to keep the game and the parade pretty close to one and other this year, so this is why they moved the parade up a day. But that is just my theory.

Other cities/towns have parades on Sunday...where I used to live in Roanoke Rapids, NC they have their AMVETS Christmas parade every year the first Sunday of December. So today ought to be beside the point for not having a Rose parade and Rose Bowl game.

But the Tournament of Roses parade never occurs on Sunday... it's just a long-standing rule they've had.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tournament_of_Roses_Parade

Perhaps one of the United States of America's most important annual festivities, The Tournament of Roses Parade is the 116-year-old traditional parade generally held on New Year's Day in Pasadena, California, eight miles north of downtown Los Angeles. When New Year's Day falls on a Sunday, the tournament observes the tradition of moving the parade to the following Monday. This convention allows for religious observance, but was originally instituted because the Parade's many equine participants would not tolerate the pealing of the church bells along the route. The Tournament of Roses Association Web site has an alternate equine explanation. It says the "Never on Sunday" policy was instituted in 1893 "to avoid frightening horses tethered outside local churches and thus interfering with worship services." In 2006, the parade will be held on January 2.

It starts at 11am ET... 8am Pacific.

I marched in the Rose Parade in 1961. Our band also marched in the Macy's Parade. The Rose Parade was the hardest of any parade in which to march. We were the only unit to finish without anyone falling out. Seven miles of marching really takes its tole. We were a high school dancing band and it was really hard. Some of the best memories I have are marching with my high school band.

and we never did anything close to that! And, heck - they
always put us behind the horses - dodging those ****piles
was work, enough!

Well, I'm so glad that I didn't miss it. What time does it come on Central Time? I always forget, but, I LOVE the Rose Bowl Parade.

The good news is that the stratiform rain is materializing a bit later than expected, and that there are only showers across the vicinity attm.

Parade starts in about a half an hour.

Question - how long does it last? If it lasts longer there is a bigger chance of the stratiform heavy buckets of rain appearing by the end of the parade.
