Today's Pet Peeve

This happens to me alot. I was in the Dollar Store tonight, and there was a long line. The checker was having trouble with the scanner. One customer had about 10 of the same item, and the checker scanned each one, and then put it in the bag. She repeated the process one by one. It seemed like it was taking forever. Sure enough, the 8th piece wouldn't scan. She must have tried to scan that one about 20 times it seemed, and she got frustrated and called for the manager. All she would have had to do would have been to get one of the pieces out of the bag and scan that one. Or better yet, when she saw 10 of them, just scan one piece 10 times. It would make the line go faster and improve customer service. When it was my turn, I asked her if it was store policy to scan each item and she replied no. I suggested nicely what she could have done, but I don't think she "got" it.

Sorry for the rant, but I had a stressful evening tonight and that didn't help.

I hate that too. I'm willing to bet all (I'd be surprised if one didn't, but I guess it could happen) registers have a times button. You scan one, and times it buy how many they're buying. Takes no more then a second, then you're done with all of them. Not rocket science! :roll: In this day and age, needing to scan more then one of the exact same item should be pretty null and void. And yet? People still do it!

If I didn't know you are in PA I would have thought we went to the same dollar store! :lol:
We have a dollar store at our mall (really we do - it's awsome) and they just count the items, key in the amount and add tax. duh.... don't ya think the rest could figure it out? :roll:

Eww, don't that burn ya up? Patient on the outside, or trying to be, but fuming inside.
Same here at our dollar store, they used count you items and then just hit the # of items, that just changed they now scan each item and give you a "real" reciept with each item listed, which they didn't before. And yes usually they can hit the quanity button. 10 quanity and then scan the one item you are buying 10 of. She was probably young and still has much to learn. Does not make it any easier watching that while waiting in a long line. :grrr:

Hmm, how do they keep track of the inventory they've sold?

I saw a lady in Wallyworld the other day with a cart full of small items. She was in the self-check line. She would scan about 5-10 items and then purchase them. Then she'd scan 5-10 more items and purchase them. None of us could figure out what she was doing but the folks in line behind her looked like they wanted to die.

Yup. I hate that too. You see the easy way out and wish the clerk would see it too.

I guess my comment would be, if all 10 items were the same, then you could take one out of the bag, and scan it. But if all 10 were different items, perhaps she had to scan that stubborn one for inventory purposes? That might have been why she was trying to scan, 20 times. At Kroger's they run it past the scanner 2 or 3 times, if it won't take, they just type in the numbers. She could have tried that!

I was 3 customers behind a lady at JoAnn Fabric's yesterday. Her cart was overflowing, with so much stuff. Her total bill was $180! 20 or so cut fabric pieces, baskets, gift items, candles, plastic bins, xmas decorations, you name it, she had it in this cart. The rest of us had just a handful of items. The lady behind her had about a yard of ribbon, that was it! Boy did I feel sorry for that customer. The line stretched to about a dozen or so customers. The clerk finally got on the PA asking for another cashier. Sure enough, one came, said she'd take the next customer in line, but to do this fairly, all of us would have had to walk completely around the check out counter, because the registers were in opposite corners. So what happened was the next person in line was accommodated, but quickly the last people in line, filled in. So I still had to stand there and wait for the lady with the $180 bill to finish up. Frustrating! That's one of my pet peeves - the new cashier should maybe say - I'll take the next 3 customers waiting in line, in order!

As someone who once ran a register..

Most registers have a quantity button on their somewhere. You can scan the item once, then push that key and it'll automatically add in the cost for that many once you put in how many you have..

When I used to work at my local Joan Fabric store and we had a sale on embroidery floos, I dreaded that. You can't scan one many times unless they bought multiples of one color. Each color would have a different barcode on the label wrapped around the floos at one end. Many people would buy handfuls of floss each one a different color, and each one had to be scanned. One lady bought one of each color we had and I was standing at the register scanning that floss for 20 minutes on that one customer. My peeve is people who butt into a line and say since I only have this , I will be out before you notice how long you wait. Makes me want to rip their hair out by the roots!

What upsets me (well lately) is when a cashier will stand there and talk to someone else instead of focusing on the items. Or when a customer gets to the checkout and the cashier can't find a price for a dollar item. The whole line is halted while they call for a manager who in turn has to go to where the item is located to get a price.

Pascagoula is packed now and getting in and out of Walmart now is an adventure. Add that above to the mix and you have bad tempers.

DaylilyDawn, I dislike that too. But, if I see an elderly person standing there with a few items I usually allow them to go ahead of me.

Another pet peeve is these people that get the wheelchair carts at Walmart then they block the aisles. I understand some of them need the assistance but some DO NOT, they are just downright sorry and lazy!!

Another one is when you see all these people pull into handicap spaces knowing they do not park there. All the while watching someone handicapped walking to the store who can't find a handicap parking space.

Our registers at Sears have quanity buttons. Comes in handy when a customer has about 20 bath towels. A cashier was left by herself the other day and about 20 customers were in line. I normally don't work register anymore because I work on the salesfloor in shoes. And if I jump on the register, they won't be anybody to help the customers. But, I saw how nervous the cashier looked with all those customers in line. So, I jumped on it and took a chance. I made the mistake of saying I will take the next one in line. Everyone starts running full speed to the register. I am like, whoa. Everyone was all sprawled out, so I had no clue who was next. So, I just started checking out whoever made it the register first. And they all started arguing and shoving each other and saying I know I was next. And whatever, we can take this outside. I really thought a fist fight was going to break out about who got in line first. And then, right when I was checking out, a lady needed help in shoes. I told her I will be with her as soon as I got off the register. I tried to call my manager for help, but she was stuck in jewelry and did not get to the lady in shoes fast enough. The lady slammed her shoes on the counter and left. It has been really stressful because one of my co-workers in shoes quit on the spot with no notice.

That only seems to happen at Wally World late at night, when I notice that someone opened a can of rednecks. :roll:

Reminds me of an episode of "Mama's Family" when Mama (Thelma) has some training by Naomi at the Food Circus store and Mama comes across an item that had trouble getting scanned and goes over and over and over, etc., with an ever growing long line of customers! :eek:
