Weaker storm spares south India

A storm that forced thousands to evacuate is passing over the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu but is weaker than had been predicted.

Cyclone Fanoos was downgraded to a deep depression as it made landfall from the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, the second storm to hit Tamil Nadu in a week.

People in low-lying coastal areas had been advised to move to shelters and fishermen were told not to sail.

Rains have displaced more than 200,000 people in the area since October.

Evacuation

The BBC's TN Gopalan in Madras says the deep depression made landfall near Vedaranyam, 50km (30 miles) from Nagapattinam, on the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu.

It has brought heavy rain to Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry but less damage than feared.

The director of the cyclone warning centre in Madras, SR Ramanan, said: "Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 50-60km/h is still likely along Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for one more day."

About 30,000 people had been evacuated in and around Nagapattinam as a precautionary measure.

Sandbags and other defences were prepared and more than 100 relief centres set up.

Last week, thousands of people in low-lying areas along the coast of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh were warned to stay out of the way of Cyclone Baaz.

About 300 people have died because of heavy rain and floods in southern India this year.

More than 6,000 people died in the region when the Asian tsunami struck almost a year ago.
