Rebecca cannot be a name for Rita. Rebekah (which is an alternative spelling for Rebecca) is already a name for the Atlantic.

o.k., I now understand. What do you think of the names Derek, Emma, Krista, Renee, Steve and Whitney?

This is slightly offtopic, but in today's edition of the (South Florida/Ft. Lauderdale) Sun-Sentinel, the Outlook section had a synopsis and graphic of the season thus far and placed an * next to some of the names. According to the key, this means "To be retired."
I was under the impression that this is done by the WMO at a later time. Do they have some inside information, or are they merely speculating as many here do?
FWIW, they placed this notation beside Dennis, Emily, Katrina, Rita, Stan, and Wilma. While many agree with this list, it seems irresponsible to state this as fact if it is not official yet.

Emily and Stan will likely not be retired, with Dennis standing a chance of not being retired either.

Dennis will be retired, as will Emily and Stan. Apparently, you missed the massive damage in Cuba that Dennis caused, the massive damage Emily caused in Mexico, and the thousands of deaths attributed to Stan.

My updated list:

Arlene
Bret
Cindy
Daryl
Eileen
Franklin
Gert
Harvey
Irene
Jose
Kathleen
Lee
Maria
Nate
Ophelia
Philippe
Robin
Steve/Steven/Stephen
Tammy
Vince
Winona

Can't use Elena, Ruth should be avoided (bad karma) and Rosa is an EPAC name.

Eva good one, wish I'd thought of that one for Emily. One question which pronunciation E-va or A-va?

They will not use renee because Rene, the masculine french version, is already in use. (I believe it will be a name next year)

It's on the 2008 list. But you're right. Renee is off limits. Also a reminder, on page 3 I posted a list of names that cannot be used to replace this year's storms. It's kind of irritating to read page 4 here and see a bunch of names repeated that have already been used elsewhere.

Here's that list again....added Renee.

Darby

Stan officially only caused 100 deaths (how that number was arrived at is beyond me). It should have been credited with the full total
