They have rules for that?

Well, they have broken their own rules once in a while... with Diane and Diana, and Dora/Doria/Dora-EPAC.

You missed Wilma. Stan is a light possibility and Ophelia would've been retired a few years ago perhaps.

No he didn't. Wilma had not yet formed when this post was posted. Wilma missed him.

Stan should be retired, although some say only 80 people were killed directly, the death toll was probably 1,400. There was that catastrophic mudslide in Guatemala were more that 500 people were buried alive!

Some replacements for Stan.

the new name also has to fit the ethnic background of that country affected.the WMO has rules for name replacement which means you can't just pick a new name out of the baby names dictionary.they have rules as i already said as far as name replacements go

For reference, the following names cannot be used to replace Dennis, Emily, Katrina, Rita, Stan, and Wilma because they are on a namelist for either the Atlantic or Eastern Pacific basins, or have been retired:

Danny
Dean
David
Darby
Daniel
Douglas
Erika
Erin
Edna
Elene
Eloise
Estelle
Emilia
Elida
Kate
Karen
Kay
Kristy
Karina
Kenna
Rose
Rebekah
Roxanne
Roslyn
Rosa
Rachel
Sam
Sebastien
Seymour
Sergio
Simon
Wanda
Wendy
Winifred
Willa
Winnie

Also, Dennis, Emily, Katrina, Rita, Stan, and Wilma are all common English names, I thought. I remember Rita Cosby began reporting from the Houston Astrodome after Katrina hit. Poor Houston. Less than a month later the entire city would be praying for Rita to go away. Rita the hurricane, not Rita Cosby.

So what can we replace Wilma with, if we can't use Wanda, Wendy, Winifred, Winnie, or Willa?

I vote Whitney.

Rebecca cannot be a name for Rita. Rebekah (which is an alternative spelling for Rebecca) is already a name for the Atlantic.

There are lots of names floating around in the old WPAC lists. But there are some names you might want to avoid as not to tempt fate. Recent names from both WPAC and EPAC that have proven to have been as bad as some of their name bearers in the Pacific are Katrina (EPAC), Rita, Ivan and Opal (all WPAC). Some names you might want to avoid would be Kathleen (EPAC), Emma and Ruth (WPAC) and Steve (SoPAC). Oh, and don't even THINK about using Irma!
