Well...why not? I say go for it. Nothing this year could beat Katrina. President Bush was the "AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY" last year....who would it be if not Katrina?

I agree. Time's person or people of the year should definitely be people involved in Katrina. Who to pick though. Max Mayfield would be a great choice.

Seriously, the NHC director, Max Mayfiield may have a chance at being named Time Mag's Person of the Year.

This year NBC News' Brian Williams nominated Mother Nature, which I thought was an interesting choice -- Max Mayfield definitely deserves it though.

Katrina is an act of nature the person of the year should be the Heros who work at the NHC and the hurricane hunters who risk their lives flying in these monsters to collect data who try their very best to warn people about what these monsters can do.

I agree about the NHC crew but what about the volunteers who have worked and are still working and will be for a LONG time helping victims of the storms? For me, they rank right up there as well.

As far as natural disasters go, Katrina is nothing compared to the Tsunami, or even the Kashmir earthquake. 400K dead between them, 8 million homeless... Katrina was bad, but naming that alone as the event of the year is incredibly US-centric. I would fully support Mother Nature as a candidate which would encompass all the disasters this year... It also fits better with the 'person' of the year, as I feel Mother Naure is a better anthropomorphism, rather just than a single storm. In the apst, Time have had the computer as the person of the year, so naming an event isn't out there... They've also had Hitler and Stalin as people of the year (in a positive way!), and almost made Osama bin Laden man of the year in 2001 I believe so nominating 'bad things' isn't unheard of.

(I know the Tsunami was late 2004, but it happened after last years person of the year was announced so it would fit into this years category.. Not to mention the months of misery which this year started off too thanks to it.)

did you guys even read the article?

Katrina isnt person of the year just because it was a disaster. Katrina uncovered flaws, in society, gov't and more. there were political backlashes, panic, and the eye-opening of an entire nation, sorry to say, but one that began to assume a mindet of being 'untouchable'.

Katrina wasnt just a natural disaster. Katrina didnt just kill people. She went way beyond that.

I totally agree. It wasn't JUST a storm, it exposed lots of things and was a big wake up call for alot of people in this nation in terms of poverty.

I agree. Hurricane Katrina showed us how ill prepared people really were...hopefully next time, people will act differently. Leave when asked, not ride out, don't leave buses sinking...ect.
