I guess I would have to say busting my kneecap into 3 separate pieces wins. Childbirth (no pain meds) was much easier than the busting, surgery (second for that knee in 90 days) and subsequent rehab necessary to get the knee bending again.

Ruptured ovarian cyst is up there on the list too, a much shorter lived pain, but pretty intense for a while.

Great...I'm scheduled to have my wisdom teeth removed and jaw surgery on the same day in a few months...Is there any advice that you can give me?

As for the original topic, I haven't ever really experienced severe pain. I had a sore on my tongue that made it nearly impossible to eat, but that was more of an annoyance rather than a severe pain.

The wisdom teeth thing really isn't that bad, and I would have said that before I had childbirth or a busted kneecap to compare it to. As for jaw surgery, never been there. With any surgery, do what the doc says as far as pain med, but don't go overboard! A little discomfort is ok, it reminds you not to do things you shouldn't!

My worse pain does not come from any injury that I ever sustained. My worse pain has been with me since early childhood and it is still with me today. IBS. Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I could not imagine anything much worse. It gets so bad sometimes that I feel like dying. Imagine your worse stomach cramps ever. My monthly menstral cramps were pretty severe too. Birth control pills and aleve have been a lifesaver. As for as my IBS, no medication or diet has ever helped me.

This, unfortuately, will be severe pain. Your doctor will give you medication to help the pain, probably the Tylenol with codeine like Eric and I had. You pretty much sleep through the whole thing. I had my wisdom teeth taken out in 3 stages. All of them absessed, but at different times. They were barely able to come out and they were coming out on an angle, primarily because my mouth was too small. You'll be drinking your meals for a few days - shakes, etc.

Cajungal - your IBS is a heck of alot worse than mine. I know that when I start getting the cramps again, I'm pretty much done for the day when they go - it's exhausting. I can't say that it's been my worst pain, though it does rank up there.

Actually, I am suffering right now. My IBS pains are flaring up as I type this. It is not severe yet, but it is slowly becoming more painful by the minute. And I got to leave for work in 15 minutes! I work today from 11-8! Long shift on a Sunday, I know. It is too late to call in sick and I can't afford it anyway. I should of never took my friend's offer last night of going eat barbecue at her house. Now I am paying for it. Even though I just ate a small amount. Plus, being at work, sharing a bathroom with customers does not mix when you are sick. We don't have an employee bathroom. And the bathrooms are constantly filled with customers and with only 2 stalls. Sometimes you are waiting over 20 minutes to use the restroom! It infuriates me that we don't have our own restroom. This is Sears not the Dollar Store!

There hasn't been one drug that has helped calm down the flare ups? I swear by Dicyclomine. That at least stopped the cramping for me. I didn't take it everyday because it would make me drowsy, but it would always help calm down the cramps when I would take it.

Good Luck!!

I would not want the IBS problems you describe. Hope you DO find relief on a permanant basis.

Gall bladder attacks in the 1970's were very very severe. Back then, you were hospitalized and surgery was major. 28 days in the hospital. Two weeks at a time.

A close second was kidney stones back around 1995.

Let's see.... too many things to choose from! Orthopedically speaking, either having 2 cervical vertebrae fused and plated; or the left shoulder rotator cuff repair. Ortho surgeries are the gifts that keep on giving pain-wise: rehab sux!!

As for abdominal pain, it would have to be either the hysterectomy or the bowel resection. <shudder>

I had a tremendous ear infection in my late teens that hurt so bad I was about psychotic with the pain. Took forever to get rid of it too.

Now I'm in a life-long chronic pain/nausea/vomiting situation and trying to figure out how to deal with all that and still have a life. I thank God daily for having a truly wonderful set of doctors to help me through this mess - particularly the pain doc!

When my disc ruptured in my neck that led to the spinal fusion surgery I had done in 1997.

I got my 2 of my wisdom teeth. That was not that bad. The painful part was 3 days later. I was eating some soup and one of the noodles got caught in the hole. I was at work when I started feeling extreme pain. I was at work almost crying from extreme pain in my jaw. Luckily, it was pretty dead that night and did not have hardly any customers to deal with. I had to go to the dentist first thing that morning and had to have the food sucked out. And put a patch on it. Total relief instantly after that.

Mine were done in the dentists office and yes all four were impacted and all I had was novacaine. I was in bed for 3 days on what was Darvon#3 back then or something like that. It should have been done ina hospital like yours. Still it was the 2nd worse pain compared to the appendicitis.

If I were to rate the pain I had with wisdom teeth removal and my upper jaw work I would consider the migraine spasm headaches after my jaw job being worse. Also, having been wired shut for 8 to 9 weeks while healing and being on a liquid diet was an inconvenience but seemed minor compared to the headaches for which codeine gave temporary relief. When I was in the hospital I had a drainage tube down my throat for any excess bleeding (normal) after that kind of procedure. After the tube was removed and I had my Ensure drinks it was a strange feeling as the drink went down due to my irritation from having had the tube.

I remember when I had my first solid meal again after being de-wired...a hamburger and fries! :)

My prayers and thoughts go with you nystate for your wisdom teeth and jaw surgery!

Eric

Well I'd have to say that my broken tailbone has to be on the top of the list. Broken ribs would be next and then childbirth. Yep, I'm a clutz. Broken tailbone from roller skating and broken ribs from new shoes on carpeted steps.

I had my all four wisdom teeth out in the hospital and my hysterectomy was a cinch.

I am home from work right now sick. Just called in. I was throwing up all last night. I rarely ever throw up. Gross, I know. I don't know if it is something I ate or a touch of the virus. The nausea this morning completly went away. But, my stomach still feels upset, so I did not want to take a chance going to work. So, I called in. I did not get any sleep hardly at all and feel totally drained. I can't say it was my worse pain, but I was pretty miserable last night. I had to work 12-9 and that is too long of a shift when you don't feel well.

I think my menstral cramps in my teen years were about as bad as my IBS. So severe that I used to pass out. If it was not for birth control and aleve, I don't know what I would do.
