#1 Postby Blown Away » Thu Nov 03, 2005 12:08 pm

Just got power back and wanted to know if anybody had info on the wind gusts across Florida! The Palm Beach Post reported 124mph gust near Stuart.

That fits my personal (subjective) observations that I saw sustained winds aroud 80 - 85 mph and gusts approaching 110 mph.

I may have been a little high in that estimate, but not much.

Neither of my sourses has an "official" stamp on it. However, the equipment at the Boca Raton EOC recorded a gust in excess of 130. Here on my street in East Boca Raton, one of my neighbors recorded a gust at 142. I can find out if it was on the front end or back end if you'd like.

Our power came back on Monday although it's been up and down. I'm still afraid to put much in the refrigerator.

Wow ... don't think I saw anything that intense here. Although some of the damage here, particularly things like three or four perfectly good power poles in a row snapped in two like twigs five to fifteen feet off the ground does suggest some pretty powerful gusts.

I haven't seen what West Boca looks like, but some of the damage here in the East is really bad. My office building has no roof, my sister's condo development has porches ripped off and that's pretty common stuff. It's discouraging, that's for sure. I kind of bristled when someone asked in another post were there any WELL BUILT structures that had suffered damage. The answer was yes. Wilma's winds, especially on the back end of the storm, were stronger than anyone thought they would be.

Here in West Boca allot of downed trees and missing shingles off roofs.I think we had cat2 winds with cat3 gusts.

I heard winds here in Port St Lucie were 105mph. Not sure how official that is but I can say after dealing with Jeanne last year Wilma was almost as bad.The back side of Wilma was horrible.

exactly,

we got power back yesterday and bought a very limited supply of food. anyone in sofla that trusts this power grid or the phones is crazy. my battery backup is going crazy with all the surges and the phones are up but spotty at best. wait until they get the other500k customers up on the electrical grid and put a full load on it. there are limbs still hanging up on the wires and one is in my backyeard.

We've been up a full week and had no further problems with the phones. Power flicked for a second twice in the week. Other than that, running perfectly where I live.

And yeah, she sure packed a punch. I've been to some neighborhoods where roof damage was pretty bad and the blue tarps are becoming more and more common.

I live in East Boca and got the power back in less than 3 days with no damage....

Cable and Internet were back up a day after that

I guess I got lucky

Those extremely high gusts were likely mesovortices or microbursts. Regardless, that is quite intense. They certainly sound reasonable, however. Its a good thing those gusts didnt hit any downtown areas.

For you North PB County & Martin County people:
1. Jonathan Dickinson missile tracking annex:
Highest Sustained: 82 mph
Highest Gust: 113 mph

2. Boat in S St. Lucie river reported a 133 mph gust at
35' above sea level. (Unofficial)

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mlb/Wilma/PSHMLB.txt
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mfl/events/?id=Wilma

It seems the higher winds were in PB & Martin Counties
instead of Broward & Dade.
