well all of the storms of 2005 have amazed me in some way. Katrina amazed me the most... at that time. Rita came along and I went "wow, two whoppers in one season." Then came Wilma and I amazed then considerably, and Wilma put Katrina and Rita back a bit (although Katrina still is most noted for its end result). so as I look back at Katrina and Rita I think to myself "they werent big. they were 2005 storms." and then now I think to myself about Wilma "now there is the usual big one that we get each season. a suprise, yes, but we always have one."
so I'm kinda numb and beginning to believe in this as the norm.
a storm would probably have to go sub 800 for me to say "wow" ever again.
okay, for my answer I have to say Wilma. no words to describe her. she is just... Wilma. No other way to say it.

It's hard to say this season. So many shocking and devastating storms. For me it would be almost a tossup between Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. I chose Katrina though just because of the impact it had on me. When I woke up Sunday morning and saw it at 908 mb I literally cried. That combined with the complete devastation along the MS/LA/AL coast and the horrible days after landfall. And things still aren't good...
It's sad to say, but Rita was overshadowed by Katrina. It shouldn't have been because the people on the east TX / west LA coast lost everything too. After Katrina it was more of a here we go again feeling.
Obviously Wilma was definitely a shock too. When I saw that first recon report from them going through the eyewall I was floored.
Vince deserves a mention too. It's not everyday a tropical cyclone hits Spain.

Dennis most amazed me. I remember everyone watching the pressure drop (at a rate bordering on the insane if i remember the advisory correctly). I realize they were stronger more impressive storms. However Dennis was the first one of the year so everyone was pumped up and amazed. I think by the time some of the big storms came along to some degree the awe and wonder was replaced almost...for lack of a better word...numbness. It just wasnt as exciting for me although it was truly indescribable. Hopefully this makes sense.

HURRICANE DENNIS DISCUSSION NUMBER 23
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
10 PM CDT SAT JUL 09 2005
AFTER DEEPENING AT A RATE THAT BORDERED ON INSANE DURING THE
AFTERNOON...DENNIS HAS CONTINUED TO STRENGTHEN AT A MORE NORMAL
RATE THIS EVENING. REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE
HUNTER AIRCRAFT SHOW THAT THE CENTRAL PRESSURE HAS FALLEN TO 941
MB...WITH MAXIMUM FLIGHT-LEVEL WINDS OF 122 KT IN THE NORTHEAST
QUADRANT. BASED ON THIS...THE INITIAL INTENSITY IS 110 KT. IT IS
EXPECTED THAT WHEN THE AIRCRAFT AGAIN SAMPLES THE NORTHEAST EYEWALL
THAT IT WILL FIND STRONGER WINDS THAT WILL JUSTIFY UPGRADING DENNIS
TO A CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE.

NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
5 AM EDT SUN JUL 17 2005
AT 0324Z...THE AIR FORCE RESERVE UNIT HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT
REPORTED FLIGHT-LEVEL WINDS OF 153 KT. THE STANDARD ADJUSTMENT OF
THIS VALUE TO THE SURFACE WOULD YIELD 138 KT...OR JUST ABOVE THE
CATEGORY FIVE THRESHOLD. AT THAT TIME HOWEVER...THE CENTRAL
PRESSURE WAS RISING RAPIDLY AND ON THE NEXT PASS THROUGH THE
NORTHEAST QUADRANT ONLY 132 KT WINDS WERE FOUND. IT IS POSSIBLE
THAT EMILY REACHED CATEGORY FIVE INTENSITY BRIEFLY AROUND 03Z.

I was literally rendered speechless when I witnessed the pressure drop like a rock in Wilma as the recon reports kept coming in. No storm has ever done that to me -- even Katrina. Katrina was the long-awaited worst-case scenario storm, but, even so, the most shocking part of the event was the aftermath (widespread devastation/lack of preparation).
Personally, witnessing Wilma's insane RIC was what made me vote for her.
